Australian production of fabric masks options

  • Produce your own
    • Several different mask sizes are available here, video guide, at right
    • Use a tightly-woven fabric
    • Note that while these will filter the air, as with all fabric masks, they are untested by any regulatory body for exact filtration ability
  • Have a refugee/asylum seeker make one for you
    • We have links to a series of small, largely independently operated, refugee/asylum seeker facilities in QLD, NSW, and VIC, and are happy to source high-quality, locally made masks based on the patterns above, on your behalf.
    • In this distributed model, it will take 2-3 weeks to obtain your masks, at the outset

Global best practice: No consensus on mask standards

  • Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia have followed China and South Korea in requiring masks (ref), other countries reviewing policies. Of note, the US CDC and Surgeon General’s strategies include nonstandard masks
  • There may not be a single as some populations may be more familiar with wearing masks, and thus less likely to, for instance touch their faces or engage in risky behavior
  • There is a general consensus that high-standard masks should be reserved for those most at risk
