What is a Title I School?

A school that participates in the Federal Title I program and receives supplemental funds from the district to assist economically disadvantaged students in meeting the State’s high academic standards by providing high quality instruction and learning resources such as technology, intervention supports, and family engagement activities. In a schoolwide program these funds support all students.

How does our school participate in the Title I program?

  1. Title I is a federal education program that supports students throughout the nation. The amount of funds are decided and distributed by the number of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.
  2. A Title I schoolwide program is a comprehensive reform strategy designed to upgrade the entire educational program in a Title I school
  3. The primary goal is to ensure that all students, particularly those who are low-achieving, demonstrate proficient and advanced levels of achievement on state academic standards

How does our school spend Title I money?

  1. Personnel- Math Coach, Interventionist, and our Family Engagement Liaison
  2. Parent Resource Center- Provide resources that parents can check out to support students at home (books, games, additional practice activities)
  3. Instructional Materials- Purchasing teaching materials, and supplies for students
  4. Professional Learning- Sending teachers to training and inviting experts and consultants to support our teachers with learning the best strategies to address our students' academic needs

Walnut Creek Elementary Schoolwide Program

Focus: Increasing reading proficiency & the implementation of Math Learning plans to accompany the new GA math standards

  1. Providing teachers 90 minutes of collaborative planning where they can work with their team to plan effective lessons for the upcoming week
  2. Provide teachers with professional development on:
  3. The Science of Reading
  4. Deconstruction the new math standards
  5. Strategies for teaching students to read based on our new GA Literacy Laws for grades K-3 (All teachers at BCE participate)

What curriculum does our school use?

  1. Henry County uses a Balanced Model of Instruction to guarantee success at every grade level to ensure all students are meeting mastery of state standards
  2. In conjunction with the state standards, Henry County Schools ensures instruction alignment with the rigorous Henry Teaching & Learning Standards. – HTLS’s are designed to provide teachers with methods to support or challenge students based on their academic needs

How are you informed of your child’s learning and performance?

Students are given multiple opportunities to show mastery for each standard

  • Progress reports and report cards (Please sign up for the parent portal so you can see grades frequently)
  • Parent teacher contact- via phone, email, text, Class Dojo
  • Parent conferences- More in-depth and comprehensive on how your students are doing overall.

What assessments does my child take?

MAP Test (3 Times a year)

  • A computer adaptive test created by NWEA™ that kids take three times per school year (August, December and March). The results provide teachers with information to help them deliver appropriate content for each student and determine each student’s academic growth over time
  • This is our GA Milestones predictor for grades 3-5

AMIRA (3 times a year and at 6-8 week check ups)

  • Amira is an AI-powered reading assistant that provides personalized tutoring to students in grades K-3. Amira uses speech recognition to assess reading fluency, screen for dyslexia, and provide reading practice. Amira's goal is to help students become motivated and skilled readers
  • Taken three times a year (August, December, and March)
  • Progress monitoring happens every 6-8 week’s to ensure students are making progress
  • Students use AMIRA during their small group reading blocks 2-3 times a week

Formative Assessments- (Every 3-4 weeks)

  • Math and Reading unit assessments for grades K-5 Teacher created assessments and exit tickets aligned to our state standards and the learning targets for the week (Daily, weekly, or bi-weekly)

Georgia Milestones (GMAS)- April

  • a state required comprehensive assessment system spanning grades 3 through high school. Georgia Milestones measures your student’s mastery of the state standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science (5th grade only)

ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 - February

  • a state mandated English language proficiency assessment for Grades K–12. The test is administered every year to help school districts monitor the English language development of students identified as English Language Learners (ELLs)

Title I requires that all Title I schools ensure that all parents and families are given the opportunity for meaningful consultation and full participation in their child’s education. In this, at a minimum parents are provided with:

  • A School-Parent Compact jointly developed with school staff- Will be sent home soon- waiting on district approval, will be posted on our school website)
  • A School Parent and Family Engagement Plan- Will be sent home soon- waiting on district approval, will be posted on our school website)
  • A District Parent and Family Engagement Plan
  • Multiple opportunities for input throughout the year- At all school events
  • The Parents Right-to-Know (professional qualifications of instructional staff) �Upon Request
  • Information about their child’s curriculum, academic expectations, and progress (Curriculum night, parent conferences, etc)
  • Materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their children’s achievement, in formats and languages parents can understand �(Parent Resource Center)
  • Access to and communication with staff according to school procedure and board policies (Weekly parent calls every Friday, flyers sent home, school website, marquee, phone calls, emails, texts, dojo with teachers)
