  1. PROBLEM STATEMENT

Kimberly currently suffers from Ushers Syndrome, impacting her vision, hearing, and sense of touch. She can only recognize objects when they are in high contrast to each other, and she finds trouble cooking food which splashes when in contact with oil and high temperatures. A team of engineers have come together to create a product which aids her while cooking, which is easy to apply, clean, and operate. The product must take into consideration her impaired vision, lack of feeling on her fingertips, and her limited hearing. It must also fall under the budget of 100$.

05. TESTING PLAN

  • Temperature:
    • With pot lid: 21.8 °C
    • Without pot lid: 21.2°C

  • Protection from oil splashes:
    • Spray bottle to simulate oil splashing
    • 0L of water passed through lid

  • Contrast:
    • 9.18:1 contrast ratio of relative luminance

  • Ability to clean:
    • Point out of 10 taken off for each difficult to clean component
    • 8/10

  • Ease of use:
    • User feedback: 9/10

  • Stirring Smoothness:
    • User feedback: 7/10

05. DESIGN REFINEMENTS

The testing plan highlighted flaws in the mechanism including:

  • Wobbling stirring mechanism
  • Uncomfortable handles
  • Difficult to clean/use sliding vent

Refinements/Iterations after testing:

  • Tolerances between the axle and stirring handle were changed re-printed

  • Extension was printed for handle on pot lid

  • Sliding vent was replaced with open vent
