Mathematics has been defined as the science of patterns.

Everything from art to nature to construction projects involves patterns.

A pattern has one or more repeating elements.

The numbers in the list below are the multiples of 8.

Focus on the ones place in each number.

A sequence is finite if it has a limited number of terms.

A sequence is infinite if the terms go on forever.

Each number or other item in the sequence is called a term.

To talk about a sequence, you need to be able to identify a term’s position in the sequence and its value.

In the sequence 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, …50, the 3rd term is 15.

The position is 3rd; the value is 15.

Example: What number comes next in the sequence?

Examine the sequence, which is shown in the row of values.

What is happening from one term to the next?

    • The 2nd terms is 2 times the 1st term.
    • The 3rd term is 2 times the 2nd term.
    • Each term is 2 times the term that came before.

To solve a problem with a pattern, look for something that repeats and continue the pattern.

To solve a problem with a sequence, think about what changes from one term to the next.
