How are Interims Scored?

15 of 37

Machine Scoring vs.

Hand Scoring

Most items in interims are machine scored.

Items that include student writing require teachers to score student responses using training materials, exemplars, answer keys and the Interim Assessment Hand Scoring System.

In 2021-22, over 10,000 Interims were administered in DSUSD.

More than 4,000 student writing responses were left unscored.

California Educator Reporting System (CERS)

Houses historic summative CAASPP and ELPAC results and Interim Assessment results

  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requires that student data is only accessible to those with an educational need.
  • Students must be connected to teachers through a rostering system in CERS.
  • Site CAASPP Coordinators are responsible for creating and maintaining rosters.

Interim Assessment User Guide

For instructions on how to use the California Educator Reporting System, please read the California Educator Reporting System User Guide (PDF)

In addition, the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments Interpretive Guide (PDF) external icon is available to help educators, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders interpret interim assessment reports. The guide addresses questions of how to evaluate group, student, and item-level data from these assessments to improve teaching and learning.

For Site Coordinators: Creating Groups in the Reporting System [6:50]

  • Coordinators must create groups in CERS, to connect teachers and students, for teachers to view student results.
