THE

“‘OVERSIZED ANCALAGON”

PROBLEM:

A Visual Perspective

0.26” = 2000 ft.

DENALI IS A BETTER MODEL THAN EVEREST OR MAUNA KEA.

Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain, but is mostly underwater.

Everest’s summit is the highest elevation, but its base is at a higher elevation.

Denali has the tallest climb at ~18,000 feet.

0.26” = 2000 ft.

SCALING THANGORODRIM TO DENALI:

First, we must scale the Thangorodrim cone with itself (using Fonstad’s assumptions.)

35,000 ft tall x 5 mi wide means Thangorodrim’s

height-to-diameter ratio is 1.32:1

Then we have to scale our Thangorodrim cone to the Denali photo.

Denali photo scale: 0.26” = 2000 ft.

Denali base-to-peak: 18,000 ft = 2.34”

(This will give us our ‘base’ for Thangorodrim.)

Thangorodrim base-to-peak: 35,000 ft = 4.55”

Thangorodrim cone diameter: 5 mi = 3.432”

This gives us the exact size cones to paste onto the Denali photo.

35,000 ft tall x 5 mi wide = 1.32:1 aspect ratio

Denali Scene Scale:

0.26” = 2000 ft.

Antonov measurements, scaled:

Length: 275 7/12 ft = 0.0358”

Width: 290 ft = 0.0377”

0.0377” = 290 ft.

0.0358” = 275 7/12 ft.

This is lifesize on the Denali photo.

SCALING SMAUG TO DENALI:

First, we must scale Smaug with Bilbo.

(Assuming Bilbo is 3ft 3in…)

We scale the painting using

Bilbo’s in-painting height:

(This gives us our

painting-to-lifesize scale)

P-t-Ls_Scale: 3.25 ft = 1.37”

Then we measure Smaug:

Calculate the Lifesize Scale:

This means that the Smaug in

JRR Tolkien’s painting is only

36 ft 4 inches long

(uncorrected for perspective.)

Let’s discard that piece of knowledge & assume that the multiple scholars who have averaged Smaug’s length at 55 ft are correct.

Take Smaug’s 55ft length & scale it

to the Denali photo:

Smaug length on Denali photo = 0.00715”

Scale that with Smaug’s painting length:

JRR Tolkien’s painting needs to shrink to

0.0466% of original size to be lifesize.

However, if we zoom in, we will see that I already had the life-sized Smaug painting there all along.

(Yes, it was in EVERY slide!)

It is on the Denali peak, directly below the plane’s wingtip.

It is ¼ the height of the yellow line.

Do we still believe this oversizing of Ancalagon? His wings did not “blot out the sun.”

Thangorodrim was not solid rock, but (easily-dislodged) slag.

Glaurung “broke” the forest in his ruin.

Smaug “broke” Esgaroth in his ruin.

Durin’s Bane “broke” the mountain-side in his ruin.

The “Host of the Valar” was not the Valar.

Vingilot & Thorondor’s Eagles were ~ ½ the size of the pictured airplane.

How did Ancalagon hide, feed, & ‘issue forth’ from underground?

How did 6-ft-tall Eärendil kill the 45,000 ft long dragon (when Smaug is too small to see?)

Tolkien said that the Secondary World must be believable.

Why does “The Tale of Years” say that “The Host of Valinor” threw down Thangorodrim & not Ancalagon?

The answer is easy: It’s mythology, & inaccurate in precision, but complete in outcome. Thangorodrim’s height is not necessarily that tall. Ancalagon is not that big. The slag was disturbed during his death throes.

Once the Host of Valinor destroyed the dragons, the geotectonic shifting destroyed Thangorodrim utterly in its accompanying flood.

Only after Ancalagon’s ruin was Thangorodrim broken.
