Land Acknowledgement: A statement that recognizes the history and presence of Indigenous peoples and their enduring relationship to their traditional homelands. Land acknowledgements originated in Canada by academic institutions as an effort to honor the historical links between Indigenous Peoples and the territories on which the institutions now sit. Many other academic and non-academic organizations and institutions have adopted this practice.

Before proceeding…

“The land presently known as Acton, Massachusetts is the ancestral land of the Agawam, Nipmuc, Massachusett, and Pawtucket peoples. These Indigenious tribes suffered genocide, displacement, and colonization from European nations (primarily the British) in the 16th- and 17th-centuries. I acknowledge that have benefited greatly from the colonizers who stole this land from Indigenious people and that I am privileged to live on it today. I will continue to do my part to recognize, educate, and raise awareness of colonialism, which is a current, ongoing process in our world, as well as build relationships with local Indigenous groups and organizations to preserve their culture, traditions, and people.”

When I first began doing land acknowledgments, it felt like just another white performative gesture unless I were to follow it with action.
