“Consider your ways.”

5 of 34

“Consider your ways.”

SCRIPTURE

2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.

3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this house lie waste?

5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

- Haggai 1:2-6

“Consider your ways.”

L. Tom Perry

Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

I…continue to be impressed with how clearly the Old Testament prophet describes the conditions of today. Almost daily we read of those who invest for little return. We eat food so refined that the nourishment is lacking. We witness the drink that can never satisfy the thirst for those who drink; the dressing for style, rather than warmth, comfort, and modesty; the high wages of the wage earner today which still do not satisfy or supply his needs…

“Consider your ways.” Isn’t now the time to follow the Lord’s direction and receive the divine assurance that he is with you, guiding you in the paths that will make your life meaningful, rewarding, and satisfying?...Couldn’t your life stand some open rewarding by the Father? Isn’t this the time to learn how to communicate with our Father which is in heaven?

I’m Trying to Be like Jesus(Children’s Songbook #78)

MUSIC

1. I’m trying to be like Jesus;

I’m following in his ways.

I’m trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say.

At times I am tempted

to make a wrong choice,

But I try to listen

as the still small voice whispers,

Words and music: Janice Kapp Perry, b. 1938

2. I’m trying to love my neighbor;

I’m learning to serve my friends.

I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again.

I try to remember

the lessons he taught.

Then the Holy Spirit

enters into my thoughts, saying:

Chorus:

“Love one another as Jesus loves you.

Try to show kindness in all that you do.

Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,

For these are the things Jesus taught.”

Am I Putting the Things of God First in My Life?

SCRIPTURE

1:8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.

9 Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.

14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit…of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God…

2:9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

- Haggai 1:8-9,14; 2:9

Am I Putting the Things of God First in My Life?

Terence M. Vinson

Former Member of the Seventy

Somewhat hidden in the Old Testament book of Haggai is a description of a group of people who…got it wrong by not placing Christ at the center of their lives and their service. Haggai paints some thought-provoking word pictures as he reprimands these people for staying in their comfortable houses instead of building the Lord’s temple…

We can feel enduring joy when our Savior and His gospel become the framework around which we build our lives. However, it’s so easy for that framework to become, instead, the things of the world, where the gospel sits as an optional extra or as simply attending church for two hours on Sundays. When this is the case, it is tantamount to putting our wages into “a bag with holes.”…Giving our all doesn’t mean that we will be continually enveloped in blessings or always have success. But it does mean that we will have joy. Joy is not fleeting pleasure or even temporary happiness. Joy is enduring and is founded on our efforts being accepted by the Lord.

I Want to Live the Gospel(Children’s Songbook #148)

MUSIC

1. I want to live the gospel,

To know that its teachings are true,

To follow the plan of my Savior

And live as he wants me to do.

2. I want to live the gospel,

To know I am heard when I pray,

To know that I will be happy

Because I have learned to obey.

Chorus:

I will try in all I do and say

To live the gospel more each day.

I will try in all I do and say

To live the gospel more each day.

Making and keeping covenants can help me be more like Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ

Making and keeping covenants can help me be more like Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ

SCRIPTURE

3 Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.

4 Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD.

5 Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

- Zechariah 1:3-6

Making and keeping covenants can help me be more like Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ

David A. Bednar

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Making and keeping sacred covenants yokes us to and with the Lord Jesus Christ. In essence, the Savior is beckoning us to rely upon and pull together with Him, even though our best efforts are not equal to and cannot be compared with His. As we trust in and pull our load with Him during the journey of mortality, truly His yoke is easy and His burden is light...

As we are yoked with Him through sacred covenants and receive the enabling power of His Atonement in our lives, we increasingly will seek to understand and live according to His will….May each of us do and become better through the Savior’s Atonement.

And ponder on the beauty of an earth made clean again.

And I can be forgiven and improve myself each day.

The Lord can make us holy

20 of 34

The Lord can make us holy

SCRIPTURE

3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.

4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by.

6 And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua, saying,

7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

The Lord can make us holy

Carol F. McConkie

Former Member of the Young Women General Presidency

Holiness is in the striving and the struggle to keep the commandments and to honor the covenants we have made with God. Holiness is making the choices that will keep the Holy Ghost as our guide. Holiness is setting aside our natural tendencies and becoming “a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord.” “Every moment of [our lives] must be holiness to the Lord.”… Our Father in Heaven knows us. He loves us, and He has provided for us all that is required so that we can become holy as He is holy…

We recognize the multitude of tests, temptations, and tribulations that could pull us away from all that is virtuous and praiseworthy before God. But our mortal experiences offer us the opportunity to choose holiness. Most often it is the sacrifices we make to keep our covenants that sanctify us and make us holy… Heavenly Father has given each of us the capacity to become holy.

I Love to See the Temple(Children’s Songbook #95)

MUSIC

1. I love to see the temple.

I’m going there someday

To feel the Holy Spirit,

To listen and to pray.

For the temple is a house of God,

A place of love and beauty.

I’ll prepare myself while I am young;

This is my sacred duty.

2. I love to see the temple.

I’ll go inside someday.

I’ll cov’nant with my Father;

I’ll promise to obey.

For the temple is a holy place

Where we are sealed together.

As a child of God, I’ve learned this truth:

A fam’ly is forever.

Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah

SCRIPTURE

12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

13:6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah

Henry B. Eyring

Of the First Presidency

Prophets had testified for millennia of the birth of a promised Messiah…When I read prophetic promises of His birth—especially during the Christmas season—I feel the Holy Ghost witness again that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. As I study the Savior’s words and His life, I come to know Him and love Him for what He has done for each of us. The spirit of love is the spirit of Christmas.

…Because the Christ child became the Messiah who magnified His ministry and mission by doing the will of the Father, He delivers us from spiritual and physical death… The baby in the manger was the Son of God, sent as a gift from the Father to become our Savior. Through the joy we feel because of His coming, our burdens can be made light. That is because the babe of Bethlehem who delivers us from sin and death can also deliver us from sorrow, doubt, fear, and pain.

He Sent His Son(Children’s Songbook #34)

MUSIC

How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness?

He sent his Son, a newborn babe, with peace and holiness.

How could the Father show the world the pathway we should go?

He sent his Son to walk with men on earth, that we may know.

How could the Father tell the world of sacrifice, of death?

He sent his Son to die for us and rise with living breath.

What does the Father ask of us? What do the scriptures say?

Have faith, have hope, live like his Son, help others on their way.

What does he ask? Live like his Son.

SCRIPTURE

4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:

7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.

9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

Prophets teach us about Jesus Christ

James M. Paramore

Former Member of the Presidency of the Seventy

As we open scriptural pages to read of the plan for life on earth, we see that our Father in Heaven made known to the prophets of the Old Testament that the Savior, His Only Begotten Son, would come to earth. Isaiah the prophet said that “a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son”, and “the government shall be upon his shoulder”, and later said that “the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth” was “the Holy One of Israel”, even the “redeemer…that maketh all things”. Jeremiah, Zechariah, Job, Moses, and others of the prophets had revealed to them the Christ and that He would come to provide the way for all of us to return to our Father in Heaven. These prophets left their witnesses for us to study and to pray about and to receive our own testimony of the “looked for” Savior of the Old Testament… He always provides witnesses of the truths and blessings He brings.
