Setting Postsecondary Goals

ICAP is a multi-year state mandated plan that intentionally guides students as they explore career, academic and post-secondary opportunities. Everyone has a contribution they can make to a student's ICAP process. We would like to gather information about what you are already doing with students to support the ICAP.

ICAPs include but are not limited to:

Career and college interest surveys

Short and long term goal writing

Course planning and elective selection

Discussion of career pathways within subject areas

Connecting school based instruction to the world of work Identifying and practicing 21st century skills

Discussions about the financial impact of life after high school, including education

6th Grade

In 6th grade, we introduce the concept of post-secondary readiness through visiting the students in their classrooms to establish the following:

  • Define: ICAP, plan of study (4-year plan)
  • Log into Career Cruising
  • Learning Styles Inventory
  • Do a Career Matchmaker inventory

7th Grade

In 7th grade, the students’ exploration and review of their post secondary goal is continued and looked at a little more closely:

  • Review and update post-secondary and academic goals
  • Career Keys
  • Save at least two careers off results list
  • Update checklist
  • Write journal entries for each goal

8th Grade

In 8th grade, students take their goals and interests that they have reviewed and collected thus far, and begin exploring career options:

  • Explore Career Keys inventory
  • Edit and add to Favorite Careers list
  • Review and update goals
  • Write a journal entry for each updated goal
  • Update checklist
