Heat Stress Prevention

  • Schedule strenuous activity or work that requires heavy protective clothing and/or respirator to cooler times of the day.
  • Drink water frequently (1 cup every 15-20 min).
  • Take frequent breaks in shades or air conditioned areas.
  • Watch out for each other for signs and symptoms of heat illnesses.
  • Report to Health Services (B26, X6266) if you feel you are experiencing a heat-related disorder, or call X6999.
  • Use cooling techniques if needed, such as fans or reflective shields.

High-Heat Procedures (temp = or > 95°F)

    • Ensure effective communication between employees and supervisor by voice, observation, or electronic devices
    • Buddy system or other means to observe employees for alertness and signs or symptoms of heat illness.
    • Drink plenty of water.
    • Pre-shift meetings before the commencement of work to review the high heat procedures, encourage employees to drink plenty of water, and remind employees of their right to take a cool-down rest when necessary.
    • Designate one or more employees on each worksite as authorized to call for emergency medical services, and allowing other employees to call for emergency services when no designated employee is available.
    • Recommend employees take a minimum ten-minute net preventative cool-down rest every two hours. Additional ten-minute cool-down rest at end of 8th and 10th hour of work.
