A little history and context might be helpful...

  • Traditional manufacturing industries were a cornerstone in NC but declined sharply in 1980s due to offshoring (e.g., tobacco, textiles, furniture)
  • North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBIOTECH) established as first government-funded economic development organization focused on biotech in the world
  • Burroughs Wellcome (GSK) layoffs in 1980s/90s triggered massive biotech startup growth
  • Biomanufacturing eyeballed as a strategic focus for the state...held steady on that focus for the past 30-40 years

Partnership and collaboration is really at the center...

  • Key organizations continue to meet regularly to coordinate, strategize, and compare notes
  • NCBIOTECH and NCLifeSci serve as backbone organizations in many ways championing connections and partnership
  • Partnerships are getting more nuanced just like everywhere in the country due to increased federal investment

What does industry-academic partnership look like?

AMERICAN INNOVATION AT WORK

37

©2024 NIIMBL | Confidential

Industry – academic partnerships are mutually beneficial.

Industry – academic partnerships have been moving away from a "transactional approach" to deeply-rooted partnership models

One Offs

    • Research Project
    • Customized Training
    • Post Doc Funding

Deep-Rooted Partnerships

    • Slate of Projects
    • Reciprocal sabbaticals, post-docs, job placement
    • Cross-disciplinary / multiple departments
    • Shared Collaboration "Centers"

Partnerships ensure curriculum is aligned to need.

  • Hands-on teaching of industry relevant equipment and technologies requires faculty and staff with industry experience (compensation is an issue)

  • Industry Advisory Boards should be structured to gain advice on next-gen skills (not just an info dump, empower the board)

  • Let industry leaders be your "change champions" but recognize you 1) need a variety of industry stakeholders and 2) can't rely on one or two people
  • Know WHY you are bringing industry to the proverbial table
