- Abraham and his decendents through Issac formed the Jewish faith
- Split from Jewish religion when Jesus Christ was born/died
- Founded in Jerusalem, modern day Israel
- Spread to Europe through Paul

Founder: Muhammad
Founding Story:
- Muhammad received revelations to convert his Arabic people to monotheism and created the religion of Islam in Mecca around 600AD
- Muhammad's message was sent by Allah (God) and is the same message as was sent to the Jews through Abraham and Christians through Jesus
- Muhammad believed that Jews and Christians had gotten lost and off track

One God, Pray 5X/day, Fast during Ramadan, Alms to poor, Pilgrimage to Mecca
- do not believe Jesus was the son of God, but rather a prophet
- angels are messengers of Allah's word
- Muhammad is Allah's prophet
- Muslims must follow Allah's law so laws of government are religious law (theocracy)

Practices and Traditions:
- Do not eat pork (ham/bacon/etc) or drink alcohol
- Women cover themselves and are escorted by men in public, remain virgins until married
- Prayer happens 5 times a day, always facing towards Mecca, on prayer rug

- Sunni is majority with 85% of population

- God spoke to Abraham and promised his son Issac/family the land of Israel if he believed in only one god (location = Middle East)
- Abraham and his descendants formed the Jewish faith (Abraham banished his son Ishmael and his mother Hagar to the desert - *Muslims)
- Later God revealed his word to Moses

- Hinduism formed out of traditions and culture of the Indian people over a long period of time staring in 6000BC

- polytheistic, god is Brahma and is found in many forms, the gods and godesses
- people are born into specific roles in life, strict social system = caste system
- people go through life fufilling their duty in life (darma) and that decides what caste they come back when reincarnated
- what you give/do will be given back to you (karma)

- cremation for their dead
- worship gods and goddesses at a temple, a private/small place not meant for lots of people
- temples are dedicated to a specific god/goddess
- do not eat beef (cow = sacred)
- typically have arranged marriages, can't marry outside of caste

- meditated and realized that happiness would come with no suffering, gave up his wealth
- became enlightened and called "Buddha"

- worldly possessions lead to suffering, enlightenment comes from giving up all wealth (Four Noble Truths)
- Follow the Eightfold Path to become enlightened
- reincarnation occurs until your soul is enlightened, then you reach nirvana

Northern Ireland = part of the island of Ireland but belongs to the United Kingdom
- Ireland = Catholic, UK = Protestant
- Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland fought each other because Protestants were persecuting Catholics
- IRA = Irish Republican Army, wants NA to be a part of Ireland again (Catholics)
- Ulsters = Protestant army, aligned with UK, wants NA to stay with the UK
Religious Conflict
Israel = state created in 1947 by the United Nations for Jews
- Zionist movement = Jewish belief that the "promised land" of God is Israel and they should move back there
- Palestineans = Arabic Muslims, already lived there for centuries
- Jews moved in, took over, displaced Palestineans
- Hamas = Palestinian terrorist movement to reclaim land
- All started with the Crusades when the Christians tried to take the land from the Muslims in Medeival time
