How it Will Work

  • In teams, you will play five rounds of ‘reading review’ Among Us. There will be music.
  • In each round, there is one ‘imposter’, or statement, that isn’t true about the reading. This game functions to assess whether or not you’ve understood what you read.
  • Each round, you will have around 1-2 minutes to debate with your team about the choices and look through your book to find the answer.
  • One team member will write your final answer on your whiteboard and hold it up for me to see.
  • I will record your final answer.
  • Do your best to choose the right answer because the winning team will get a prize.

RATIONALE

Not only is it important that we understand a text we are reading, but it is equally important that we can apply that text to the world in which we live. The idea of ‘love’ is thrown around a lot in 1984, but it is hardly ever defined. This happens in the real world just as frequently. However, as young people, it is important to know the difference between these concepts so that you can better understand both texts you read, and the people around you.

Let’s Talk About It

A relationship built on love looks very different from one built on lust. Lust is only based on only sexual attraction wheras love is based on compassion and attraction.

Let’s closely examine Winston and Julia’s Relationship

  • In small groups, you will analyze Winston and Julia’s relationship by examining a quote from the text and answering prompting questions.
  • It’s your job to decide whether or not their relationship is one built on love or lust, and whether or not that means their relationship is strong or weak.
  • After you turn in that activity, you will fill out an exit slip. If you finish with that, you may read Part III chapter 1 in 1984.
