Four Eyes is a memoir by Rex Ogle, about his middle school experiences in the 1990’s.

​

The story is a humorous and sometimes brutally honest tale about starting 6th grade and trying to fit in.

​

Rex has to deal with bullies and his family’s money struggles, all while wearing the "ugliest" pair of glasses ever.

IN THE BEGINNING

Set in the 1990’s, Rex is a 12 year old boy excited to start middle school.

He’s looking forward to seeing all his friends from 5th grade, getting a locker of his own and choosing the best electives. And he’s got a best friend to make it all that much better.

His best friend ditches him for the “cool kids.”

Money issues make things harder at home.

Book discussions will be a part of the school wide Reading Celebration at the beginning of the 2026/27 School Year.

Redesign the Book Cover

Look at the original cover of Four Eyes. Recreate the cover with your own original artwork that depicts your vision of the book.

Requirements:

• Use 8.5 X 11 inch paper
• Must be in COLOR
• Must include at least two elements from the story- characters, action and/or setting
• Must include the title - either Four Eyes, or your own appropriate title
• Must include author's name

Create Some Glasses

Rex is beyond embarrassed to wear his new, cheap glasses. Yet his little brother Ford thinks glasses are cool, so he makes him a pair. Design a pair of glasses that you and Rex would be proud to wear.

Here are some ideas:

• Create digital glasses. Save it to google drive and share it with your Advisory teacher. Tell us why they are the perfect pair for you.
• Take an old pair of glasses, and personalize them.
• Make a pair of glasses out of found objects like wire or paper clips, etc., color it and personalize it.
• Draw a pair of glasses on an 8.5 by 11 inch piece of paper. Use color and artwork to express yourself. Put your name and Advisory teacher on the back.
• Describe the perfect pair of glasses, and tell them why they are a perfect fit for you.

Create a Collage

Rex lives in a complicated, challenging world. Choose one of the following themes to represent in a collage either digitally, or on poster board. Express your view about how the theme is important to the story.

Create Your Own Comic Strip

Comic books are very important to Rex and his friends. Think about a school memory and turn it into a comic strip or recreate your favorite scene in the book.

Here are some ideas:

• Choose one of the following templates to use as your base.
• Comic strip can be done digitally or hand drawn.
• Strips should have between 4-6 frames or more.
• Be sure to include pictures and words in each frame.

Turn Your Project in

Any project you choose can be submitted the following ways:

1. On paper, with your name and your Advisory teacher's name on the back

OR

2. Save it in your google drive and share it with your Advisory teacher.

All projects are due Friday, September 4th

REX OGLE is an award-winning author of more than a hundred books, comics, graphic novels, and memoirs. Some of his most notable books include Free Lunch, Abuela Don’t Forget Me, Road Home, and middle grade graphic novels Four Eyes and Pizza Face.

Under his pseudonym REY TERCIERO, he also re-imagines classics as modern and diverse graphic novels, including Meg, Jo, Beth, & Amy, Northranger and Dan in Green Gables.

Rex Ogle’s books address a myriad of timeless issues, including themes of friendship, puberty, bullying, and poverty. He uses his personal experiences to create stories filled with humor and compassion.
