Housing Horizons
Shared Roots Living connects older homeowners having equity and surplus space with the rental pool using a reverse-mortgage to construct an ADU
THE PROBLEM
28% of the nation’s large homes are owned by baby boomer empty nesters
The U.S. housing shortage grew to 4.5 million in 2022
Many seniors live in homes with excess space—bedrooms that are no longer in use after their kids have moved out—yet they often face financial strain, particularly on fixed incomes. At the same time, we have a growing crisis of affordable housing for low-income individuals and families.
THE RESOLUTION
Our idea is to leverage the excess space in elderly homes to create affordable housing units. By building an ADU within the home, we can create a separate living space for low-income tenants, helping alleviate the housing shortage while providing financial benefits to the homeowner.
“According to the AARP, nearly 90 percent of adults over 65 want to remain in their current homes as they grow older.”

With ADU:
Win-Win-Win
We're building value for homeowners, opportunity for low-income individuals, and growth for the community.
By converting unused space in housing, we solve two problems with one innovative, scalable, and sustainable solution.
FOR HOMEOWNER
FOR COMMUNITY:
Our model helps address the affordable housing crisis by using existing properties, reducing the need for new land or large-scale developments .Mitigates the negative impacts of an aging neighborhood by adding younger renters to areas that traditionally houses older generations.
They generate a new income stream that helps cover living expenses, medical costs, or any other needs, while increasing the long-term value of their property.
FOR LOW INCOME TENANTS:
They gain access to safe, affordable housing in established neighborhoods, reducing displacement and providing opportunities in areas that might otherwise be too expensive.
CONCLUSION:
Thank you!
