The CARPE Collaborative’s ultimate goal is to increase the number of students who are Black, Latino/a, Indigenous or experiencing poverty who apply, enroll, and ultimately go to colleges they are most likely to graduate from. To achieve this goal, we need to increase the number of students who apply to at least one CSU/UC and ideally complete 4+ college applications, especially students from traditionally underrepresented groups.

To ensure students get the support they need, each team needs a way to track college application and enrollment milestones for individual students, especially students from the groups above who are eligible for CSUs/UCs. CARPE teams use a simple spreadsheet called a Milestone Tracker to monitor the progress of students for each college milestone, and to flag individual students who may need additional support.

From 2018/19-2022/23, the CARPE Network brought together 30 high schools from across Southern California to learn as a community how to increase the number of students who are African American, Latino, Indigenous, or experiencing poverty who apply, enroll, and ultimately attend colleges they are most likely to graduate from.

High schools who have been with CARPE have made significant progress towards this aim by increasing the number of students completing a financial aid form.

DCPS Postsecondary Planning formed a working partnership with our CTE programming. Aligned scope and sequences and started collaboration retreats.

2024

Structural Shifts!

CCC Positions are no longer central office, but are on the school budget. School Counseling and CCCs are brought together to be managed under the same team.

DCPS launches a new Strategic plan that now includes all students must have a Postsecondary Plan.

2016

College & Career Coordinator Pilot

SY16-17 piloted College and Career Coordinators (CCCs) at Ballou High School, H.D. Woodson High School and Anacostia HS

2020

Expansion to 9 high schools

In SY17-18 the CCC initiative was expanded to 6 other high schools - Coolidge HS, Cardozo Education Campus, Dunbar HS, Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC), Eastern HS and Roosevelt HS.

Roundtables - Staff Expectations

  1. Host a minimum of one monthly roundtable (September - June)
  2. Build a strong community among the College and Career team including but not limited to:
    • Senior Counselor/International Academy Counselor (all grade Counselors)
    • Graduation Pathway Coordinator
    • Assistant Principals
    • College Access Providers
    • Career Academy Leadership
    • Other staff identified by leadership
  3. Serve as the convener and facilitator of the roundtable each month:
    • Set a calendar of meetings and ensure scheduling works for each team member
    • Manage the agenda for each meeting
    • Provide data and current progress on college and career goals for the school
    • Create and communicate a plan to execute and achieve school college and career goals
    • Identify student specific areas for intervention and where support is needed
    • Lead the agenda and communicate challenges to the team at the roundtable meeting
  4. Submit the agenda, notes, and next steps from the meeting at the end of the month
