Meaning of common fractions

Fractions are equal parts of a whole or a group of wholes. When a whole or wholes are divided into equal parts, each part is a fraction. The examples of fractions below are from one whole divided into equal parts.

EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS

  • Equivalent fractions are fractions with different numerators and denominators but representing the same value. Although the fractions below have different denominators and numerators but they are equal in value:

Descending order

Arranging fractions

from biggest to smallest to largest

To order fractions means to compare them to find which are larger or smaller. In order to do this, we need to use our knowledge of equivalent fractions and make the denominators equal.

To subtract fractions, they must have the same denominator

(they must be split into the same size pieces)

If all the denominators are the same, the calculation is easy!

What are fractions, decimals, and percentages?

  • Fractions, decimals and percentages are different ways of representing part of a whole.
  • We could say 50% of something, or ½, or 0.5. These are all the same quantity.
