Why is Safe Bike Infrastructure More Important

Than Ever on the Cañada/92/Skyline Corridor

  1. More bicyclists on the road than ever before, due to COVID-19 conditions
  2. Well-established link between air pollution and increased COVID-19 mortality and morbidity; Less air pollution correlated to decreased illness severity
  3. Provides access to Sawyer Camp Trail and outdoor exercise opportunities without driving there due to safety concerns
  4. Canada/92/Skyline is major north-south corridor for bike commuters, who help keep local air pollution levels down and need to be kept safe
  5. Fewer cars on the road mean drivers are driving faster
  6. History of many collisions, fatalities and many near-misses.

5 Suggestions for Improvement:

5 of 13

Suggestion #1 (cont.)

Work with Cal-trans to:

  • Paint Green Bike Ladder across Canada
  • Add Better Signage for Ralston Bike Path

  1. Better Signage on Cañada Rd to Ralston Bike Path

Ralston Bike Path

2) New 2-way Bike Path along West/South Shoulder of Highway 92, between Cañada Rd and Skyline Blvd

Work with relevant SM County Departments to:

  • Design a 2-way bike path on west/south shoulder that lets cyclists avoid the Cañada/92 intersection
  • Work with SFPUC to grant additional easements as needed

VEHICLE PARKING

Work with Caltrans to:

  • Leave vehicle parking spaces, between the roadway and separated 2-way bike path
  • Add barriers between bike path and road

Canada Road

Half Moon Bay Rd/ Hwy 92

Canada Road

Half Moon Bay Rd/ Hwy 92

Work with Caltrans to:

  • Add Signal & Crosswalk

for dedicated bike/ped crossing

  • Add “No Right on Red” for south-bound Skyline

NO RIGHT ON RED

Hwy 92

Skyline Blvd

3) Safer Crossing for Bikers at Hwy 92 @ Skyline

Option A: Add Bike Crossing at Existing Traffic Signal

Skyline Blvd

Move west-bound Traffic Signal slightly east to incorporate safer bike crossing into traffic signal.

Work with Caltrans to:

  • Confirm whether west-bound traffic signal can be moved slightly eastward

Work with SMC Parks & SFPUC to

  • Confirm if gated road can become a 2-way bike path.

See if existing (gated) utility road could convert to WIDE 2-way bike path

Option B: Move west-bound Traffic Signal eastward

10 of 13

Work with SMC Parks & SFPUC to:

  • Widen west Skyline shoulder for 2-way Separated Bike Path
  • Join up with existing Crystal Springs ‘South of DamTrail

(This option preferred for families/new riders)

Existing Crystal Springs Regional ‘South of Dam’ Trail

(Proposed) 2-way Separated Bike Path

4) Safer Biking Connection along Lower Skyline Blvd

Option A:Create 2-way Bike Path on WEST side of Skyline shoulder, between 92 and South of Dam Trail

Half Moon Bay Rd/ Hwy 92

Hwy 92

Skyline Blvd

Improve/pave and Connect these two existing utility roads to each other.

Existing Crystal Springs Regional South of Dam Trail

Work with SMC Parks & SFPUC to:

  • Improve and connect utility roads for wide

(A wide 2-way separated bike lane, with a ‘slow’ and ‘fast’ lane in both directions would accommodate both experienced and inexperienced riders. )

4) Safer Biking Connection to Sawyer Camp Trail

Option B: Create 2-Way Bike Path EAST of Skyline, on (mostly) existing utility roads

12 of 13

Work with Caltrans to:

  • Add 2-way Separated Bike Path on west side of Skyline Blvd that bypasses dangerous roadway

Work with SFPUC to:

  • Get easements granted where needed

Add Tunnel

Existing Crystal Springs Regional South of Dam Trail

Work with SMC Parks & SFPUC to:

  • Connect utility road Bike Path to South of Dam/Sawyer Camp Trails via a TUNNEL under Skyline because of heavy/fast vehicle traffic between Bunker Hill Exit and 92
  • This is safest and encourages families/less experienced cyclists

Create wide, 2-way Bike Path along utility road

13 of 13

Existing Crystal Springs Regional South of Dam Trail

Work with SMC Parks & SFPUC to:

  • Widen both shoulders of Skyline Blvd between where this tunnel would go and Bunker Hill Exit off 280.
  • Widened shoulders better accommodate experienced riders/bike commuters

5) Widen Both Shoulders northward on Skyline, from Tunnel northward to at least Bunker Hill Exit
