KS-GR is the fourth largest region in terms of area within Slovakia.

Total area: 6,753.26 km2 (2,607.45 sq mi)

(13.8% of Slovak Republic and 0.07% of Europe territory)

Number of Municipalities: 440 (17 cities)

Demographics:

KS-GR is the second largest region in terms of Slovak population.

Population (2020): 802,092

(14.7% of Slovak Republic and 0.18% of Europe population)

  • The Košice Self-governing Region (KS-GR) is one of the eight Slovak administrative regions.
  • The region was first established in 1923 and its present borders were established in 1996.
  • It consists of four historical regions: Abov, Gemer, Spiš and Zemplín.

The project aims to kickstart hydrogen activities in the Košice Self-governing Region and ultimately will develop a hydrogen ecosystem to demonstrate the suitability of hydrogen technologies to contribute to decarbonisation in Slovakia.

Considering the need for decarbonization, the goal of the Self-governing Region is to

deploy more than 40 hydrogen buses by 2030 and up to 80 buses in total by 2040. Therefore, there is a need to produce green hydrogen at a stable price and the need to build a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure.
