First assignment: Personal Logo Design

The goal of this assignment is to create a logo that is...

8 of 19

Words to know:

  • Graphic Design
  • Copyright
  • Logo

9 of 19

This assignment has several parts...

Part 1: Collect a series of 5 existing logos:

You may copy/paste logos from the Internet, or scan in printed logos. Store your logos by placing them into a Microsoft Word Document or google doc. 10 points

10 of 19

Part 2: Analyze each logo:

What gives this logo visual appeal?

What is the designer trying to convey?

Describe the color scheme and layout of the logo (example; this logo uses red text over a drawing of ....). What is the size of this logo (in pixels or inches, please specify)?

20 points

Example:

This Gatorade logo has an orange lightning bolt going through the green text. The bold is appealing to athletes because they feel that they are getting powered by something powerful. If the logo just used the word Gatorade in a black box it wouldn’t have the same effect. The text is slanting up and makes the logo very stylish.

Create your own logo

  • Your logo may be created in Illustrator or PhotoShop, but you may also use a digital camera or scanner as needed. Your logo may not contain any copyrighted photos or text.
  • It may be created as a banner (up to 600 x 100 pixels), or as a rectangular or circular image no larger than 300 x 300 pixels.
  • Your image will be judged with this criteria:
    • Adherence to size stipulations (5 points)
    • Use of color and layout (5 points)
    • Overall effectiveness ( 5 points ...yes, this is subjective, but if I like it, you get the points)

20 points total

Identity Set

Stationery (and all of the components of an identity set) are a company's way of telling others who they are. Often, designers and clients underestimate the power they have over the perception of others when they create an organization's stationery. Rather than thinking in terms of producing stationery that reflects the way a company sees itself, think along the lines of "How do they want others to see them?"

It's considerably easier to push the associations between perception and reality with stationery then it is in real life. Someone who is part of a two-person company who shows a well-designed business card can leave its recipient with the same (or better) impression than someone else who shows a card from a multimillion-dollar corporation.

Search for the best possible visual layout with color, imagery, typography, and paper to tell the world who you are.

Identity Set

Create one of each with your logo on it:

  1. Envelope: Size 10 - 9.5” X 4.125”
  2. Business Card: Standard - 2” x 3.5”
  3. Letterhead - approximately 8” x 1.5”
  4. Address label: 1” x 2.625”

17 of 19

Specifications for your identity set:

  • Be cohesive: all stationary should use the same logo and work together as a package.
  • Be visually appealing: Use the principles & elements of design with purpose to create appealing layouts for your stationery.
    • Pay attention to where you place address, email, web url, and phone number in relation to the logo
  • You may use any program on the computer to produce the final product for each

18 of 19

Specifications cont...

  • One of the designs must show a 5-30% opaque image (think watermark)
  • Indicate the space where the letter will be typed on your letterhead by surrounding it with a line, or an area of a different color or texture. Better yet include a sample letter template.
  • Print the solutions and mount them on a presentation board
  • You will present and be critiqued on your solution - Think of your audience as clients, like you are presenting them with designs they requested. Keep in mind the criteria of the logo and identity set assignments, since this is what they will base their critique on
