The Process Breakdown

  1. The Job Qualification Requirements (JQR)
    1. A packet with a bunch of things you should know how to do, and a bunch of signatures for them.
    2. Must complete all line items in order to finish! (aka have all the signature spots filled)
  2. The Written Exams
    • Rules of the Road (ROR)
    • YP Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
    • Basic Navigation
    • MUST GET 90% OR BETTER ON ALL EXAMS
  3. On Water Assessment
    • Shiphandling Assessment (using the panish, knowing what to do with casualties, etc)

4. Completing a paper chart for Annapolis (12283)

  • All of these charts are in the YPRON wardroom.
    • LOCATED IN LUCE ON 0 DECK ON THE STOCKDALE/WES B SIDE
    • More to follow on when this will be unlocked/useable
  • You will update the chart to the most recent Notice to Mariners, plot tracks, turns, Visual Bearing, Radar Aids, etc.
    • Usually done in 3/C Nav
    • More to follow on training dates/sessions

  • You can work at your own pace!
  • It's helpful to ask OICs and AOICs about questions you have, as well as senior staff.

  • Most of this is filled out while underway. We are working on a way to get ourselves on a YP in order to get this done!
  • A lot of these skills are taught in Plebe and Youngster Navigation.
  • Probably one of the easier sections to fill out

  • Mostly done through asking the enlisted crew on YPs to show you how things are done, what things are, and where things are.
  • DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK THEM, they are more than willing to do something less mundane, and to talk about their work!
  • Ask them to sign off after they give you their spheal.
  • ALWAYS BRING YOUR JQR WHEN WE DO STUFF

  • Most computers in ground floor of luce has VMS capability
    • if you wanted to try it out and learn it on your own
  • Honestly is a 1 on 1 with an officer in Seanav so they can see your proficiency and sign off
  • Commodore and I are pretty good at VMS! Ask us

  • It is the navigation system on the 703 class YPs
