Program Description

​

  • Internship program started with an inaugural cohort of high school and college students in the summer of 2021
  • Continuing this summer with a cohort of 11 high school and college students from across the LA area. Interns will be working in both developer and project management roles
  • Want to expand the program to eventually be available to all LAUSD high school students, in order to democratize access to STEM education and Tech career development

Hypothesis

Participating in this internship will make students both more competent and confident in pursuing STEM careers. Interns who participate in the program will be more likely to declare and finish a STEM major in college, and to obtain a STEM-related job after college.

Research Goal #1

Assess interns’ confidence, which we think might predict whether they will go on to pursue STEM majors in college and eventually get STEM-related jobs.

Method

Collect qualitative interviews to understand our interns’ background, their future goals, and their thoughts and feelings about starting the internship program.

These interviews will help us to improve the program and also to apply for funding to expand the program to the broader LAUSD population.

What Are We Asking You to Do?

  • Log into the intern onboarding on June 20th at 11:45 am PST.
  • Ideally, you will be paired with one other researcher to conduct each interview. With one person will take notes and enter the data into the Google form as interns are responding to questions, while the other person asks the questions.
  • You will be assigned a Google Form for the person you will be interviewing, which will contain the questions and spaces for you to record the responses.
  • Interviews will be recorded on Zoom and you will need to upload the recording after you have completed the interview.
