Narratives - Traditional tales and legends

Using the text ‘The Wild Robot’, children will plan and write a story where the central character faces a problem that needs to be resolved. Children could create their own robot stranded on the island, considering a problem they may face.

Instruction writing

Children will look at the features of instruction writing and apply this knowledge to write their own set detailing the mummification process.

Report writing

Children will explore the features of non-chronological reports and produce one of their own based on research on our Geography topic of volcanoes.

Poetry

Children will build their poetry reading and writing skills, and their vocabulary.

Science

Digestion and food:Children will learn that the main organs of the human digestive system are the mouth, teeth, tongue, oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and each has a different function. They will learn the different types of human teeth and the function of each as well as exploring what foods can damage them. The will develop their understanding of the importance of brushing teeth twice a day, make good food choices and visit the dentist regularly. The will also learn about the reason why teeth of carnivores and herbivores are different and the reasons.

Electricity: Identify common appliances that run on electricity. They will construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. Children will also identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery. They will learn that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit. Children will also carry out tests to recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.

Maths

Reasoning with large numbers

Explore place value up to four digits; read, write, represent; order and compare numbers; find 10, 100 or 1000 more or less; rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000.

Addition and subtraction

Selecting appropriate strategies; formal written methods for addition and subtraction, including column method with regrouping..

Multiplication and division

Identify and explore patterns in times tables; look at the distributive law and use it to multiply 3 digit numbers; use mental multiplication and division strategies; learn to use formal short column multiplication.

Discrete and continuous data

Read, interpret and construct pictograms, bar charts and time graphs; compare tables, pictograms and bar charts.

History

How have children’s lives changed?

Investigating the lives of children in history, pupils study leisure activities, health

issues, and work from the past, recognising both continuities and changes. They

explore the working conditions of Tudor and Victorian children in more detail and

evaluate the significance of Lord Shaftesbury’s contribution to education and

child labour laws.

Rebellion (whole school project)

Rebellion in the context of the Peterloo massacre (1819). They will learn about the timeline of events; who the significant individuals were; explore everyday life of the people wanting to rebel and recognise why they needed to act; understand what societal changes happened as a result of the rebellion.

Geography

Why are rainforests important to us?

Focussing on the link between biomes and climate, children will locate the Amazon

rainforest and explain how the vegetation in a tropical rainforest is defined by the two

Tropics. They investigate the physical features and layers of the Amazon rainforest,

considering how plants adapt to these conditions. Learning about the people who live in

the rainforest, children discuss the impact of human activity locally and globally.

working collaboratively in a responsible and considerate way as well as looking at a range of collaborative tools.

Programming

Learning the basics of programming in Scratch, children will create a simple script, use decomposition and understand what variables are.

Music

Minimalism:

What is minimalism and how do we compose our own minimalist pieces?

Children will listen and respond to minimalist music. They will compose and develop short motifs using notation, minimalist techniques and Soundtrap.
