Reading

  • 6 topics with several passages and each passage will include multiple choice questions.

  • 24 questions total.

There is no time limitation. For most students, it takes 60-90 minutes.

It is allowable to provide printed copies of reading passages if students have issues reading them on Extempore. You can obtain a copy by emailing Extempore.

Listening

  • 6 topics, each topic will have multiple passage with 1-4 multiple choice questions for each passage.

  • 24 questions total.

There is no time limitation. For most students, it takes 60-90 minutes.

Speaking (Part 1)

  • 3 Topics
  • 3 prompts per Topic
  • 9 Responses Total
  • The first 9 prompts have a 90 second limit time to respond.
  • Total of 13.5 Minutes maximum response time.
  • PLUS time for students to listen to the topic introduction and prompts.
  • 20-30 minutes total

Students have 2 attempts to record a response. Once a student clicks “submit” they cannot record again.

Once students click “Record” they should not stop the recording until they have finished providing their response.

Please advise the students to record as much as they can, even if they make a mistake, it is advised that they do not stop. If a student exits or refreshes the page before submitting their response, the attempt will be lost and they will have to record again.

Speaking (Part 2)

  • 3 Topics
  • 3 prompts per Topic
  • 9 Responses Total
  • The first 9 prompts have a 150 second limit time to respond per question.
  • Total of 22.5 Minutes maximum response time.
  • PLUS time for students to listen to the topic introduction and prompts.
  • 30-40 minutes total

Writing (Part 1)

  • 3 Prompts
  • 3 Writing Responses
  • No time limit

Encourage them to write as much as possible. Handwriting option available.

Assessment Format Helpful Information

  • Tests can be taken in any order except for Speaking and Writing. Students should take Part 1 before Part 2 for Speaking and Writing.

  • Questions need to be taken in subsequent order.

  • Once a student submits an answer, they cannot go back to retry the question. However, if students do not submit a response, they can always go back to the question.

To-Do List Prior to Facilitating Assessment

  • Coordinate with other Administrators at your District

  • Request an MDE + DPI Assessment Separately for Each Language
    • Proctors and authorized users will sign Assurance of Test Security and Non-Disclosure Form online

  • Once a request is made, Extempore will send an email to the Administrator with the following:
    • How-to videos
    • Admin and Student handbooks
    • Assurance of test security

Technical procedures & Questions

  • Have your IT Department allow Extempore emails

  • How do students to access Extempore?
    • Students can access Extempore on any device Computer or Mobile device.
    • If students are using a Mobile device such as iPads, they will need to download the Extempore App.
    • If Students are using a computer device, it is recommended that they access Extempore through Google Chrome. No Safari

  • What resource will students need?
    • Students will need the Extempore link to enroll for the assessment.
    • Testing device with microphone

How to Facilitate Assessments

  • Forward the link provided by Extempore to students so that they can enroll for their assessment

  • Helpful resources will be provided to Administrators for both students and admins via email

  • Contact Extempore for technical issues

What Happens Once a Test is Complete?

  1. Email the corresponding contacts to the language that is tested and inform them that the students have completed their assessment.
  2. Wait to hear back about the results.

Note: It may take 2-4 weeks for you to receive the results depending on the number of students tested.
