[Explain to students that they will create and discuss classroom norms and expectations for engaging in the How Are the Children program, which is focused on teaching and practicing social and emotional wellness through film production.]

T: You will engage in several lessons during the program that will introduce you to social and emotional wellness competencies and explore and practice those competencies as you learn about and produce your short documentaries.

T: You will work in small production teams during each lesson, and your final project will be a team-produced mini-documentary. You will have an opportunity to share your film with a broad audience by showcasing it at a film festival in the spring, so we must take this work seriously and do a good job in our teams.

T: Each lesson is separated into four main parts and it may require several days for us to get through one lesson. Most lessons will follow a similar pattern, but you may see some exceptions based on the lesson need.

T: I’ll begin each lesson by stating the essential questions. The essential questions are the ones you should be able to answer at the end of the lesson, and guide the content for each lesson.

T: As we learn about SEL, you will see an SEL chart with the targeted competencies for the lesson.

T: Next, there is an opener that usually provides additional information about the lesson’s focus topic

T: Then, there is an activity related to the lesson topic and essential questions. All student worksheets and documents are located in your Student Workbook and in Google Backpack for you to access and use.

T: Finally, there is a reflective closure that will guide us to reflect on what we learned in the lesson. We may sometimes do this as a whole group discussion, I may ask you to pair up with a partner, or as we move into Production Teams, I may pose these reflections as discussion points in your team.

Inclusive Opener

This year everyone is going to become a filmmaker and share their story.

We will teach you how to use your voice to tell your own story. Over the course of these lessons, you will learn how to develop and plan for your story, how to execute the production of an interview with secondary footage, and how to tie it all together for a final short documentary. We are going to guide you through different technical and creative techniques, so that others can see the world through your lens.

Important Definitions:

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) involves a set of practices that helps people process and express their emotions, to build healthy relationships, and to demonstrate empathy for others.

There are five (5) competencies or areas of SEL that we will explore throughout this program. They are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and making responsible decisions.

A documentary is a nonfiction film that documents reality. Documentaries are used to record historical events, educate or instruct.

This year we will combine our SEL learning with the creation of a documentary film.

[Instruct students to work with their groups to match the SEL competency with its correct description. **You may choose to make the matching a competition game among groups or allow each group to match at their own pace.]

[Review the answers together as a class to reinforce understanding. Explain how competencies overlap with other competencies many times as these skills can have components that cross over, i.e., Making Responsible Decisions and Being Able to Self Manage your Emotions or Manage Your Time. Students also should know that these overlapping competencies will come into play in their films - there will be one main competency to choose as a focus, but others will naturally be embedded]

[This activity helps students understand each SEL competency by connecting them with their respective descriptions, promoting a deeper understanding of how these skills contribute to overall social and emotional well-being.]

(answers will vary: David, the teacher and principal are real characters; it instructs and educates the viewer on David’s journey from uninterested student to one who is on track to succeed in school and post high school; it shares the supports he got from a teacher; it provides information from the superintendent on research, i.e. that belonging is important to student success and well-being)

T: During the course of the year, you will learn how the components we discussed about a documentary film, plus the many other components that go into filmmaking (relevant interviews, B-roll, music and more). This will help you become documentarians and tell stories that people want to see!
