Views of Eucharistic Theology
Why is this important?
All the different views of communion center around what Christ means when He said “This is my body” and “This is my blood” in reference to the bread and wine. Was it a metaphor or literal statement? How you interpret that has far reaching implications for how you understand the machinery of salvation to work. This was once so important that church killed over it, and christians were willing to die over it.
“ The heart of the Mass was the real physical, material presence of the incarnate body of Christ in the form of bread and wine. This was essential, not peripheral, because in the consecrating words of the priest another crucial sacrifice happened with this body. This is what the Protestant Reformers saw. And this is what they believed undermined the gospel of Christ crucified once for all for our sins.” - John Piper
