DOHS Agriculture Science Syllabus 25-26

Dear Parents and Students,

I am looking forward to a great 2025-26 school year! I am looking forward to sharing my love for agriculture and this school with your student. In this class we will be covering a number of agricultural topics that relate to the earth. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Course Description:

Using agriculture as a learning vehicle, the course emphasizes the principles and practices of Earth Science as a way to demonstrate the relevance of Earth Science in Agriculture to each student’s life and environment. This class will utilize local and regional issues and concerns to stimulate problem-solving activities and to foster a sense of Earth stewardship by students in their communities. The class will establish an expanded learning environment, which incorporates fieldwork, technological access to data, and traditional classroom and laboratory activities. Hands-on labs and inquiry- based lessons reinforce the science processes emphasized in the standards. Throughout the course, students will be graded on participation in intracurricular FFA activities as well as the development and maintenance of an ongoing Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program.

Units Covered with % of grade:

  • Supervised Agriculture Experience: SAE Project Plan & Records - 5%
  • Career Research & Exploration - 5%

  • The Role of Agriculture in Society - 17%
  • Earth’s Structure - 17%

Grading Policy:

Expected Learning Outcomes

ELOs A student’s grade in the course will be based on the evaluation of their performance on the key assessments(formative & summative). These assessments are directly linked to specific standards within each ELO listed above. Students will be given access to this document, which will evolve as we progress through the term. There will be work assigned that serves as practice or checks for understanding that may not be graded nor entered into Aeries gradebook. Encourage your student NOT to skip these “in between” assignments because it is important that I have the opportunity to gauge their progress in the learning and understanding concepts so that they are successful on the actual graded assessments. If a student is not demonstrating an understanding of the required concepts and skills, students will need to consult with me and to arrange additional attempts of the course work, projects and other assessments in a timely manner. Students and parents are expected to communicate with me in a timely manner when questions arise about grades, assessments and other concerns! Progress reports will be given out every 4½ weeks and one final grade will be assigned at the end of the term.

  • All grades will only reflect student knowledge & skill
  • Grades will be based on required content, not extra credit
  • Grades will be based on 70% summative assessment (tests, quizzes, projects, etc.) and 30% formative assessment(homework, classwork, etc)
  • Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning. These may include retakes and redos (conditions may apply, such as attending intervention or completing prior missed assignments)
    • Students must pass all ELOs in the class to earn a passing grade. 1 retake will be provided on all summative assessments.
    • Once you have taken the unit test, NO late work will be accepted for that unit.

FFA & SAE Project:

Why is it part of my grade?

FFA: 5%

By being in an Agriculture Class you are now a member of FFA!!! And FFA Participation is part of your grade. The state has made it a law that FFA counts as intra-curricular not extra-curricular which means that we are required to make it part of our grading system. However, there is such a positive impact in being involved in the FFA organization that will teach you skills that will last a lifetime! Students will need to complete 10+ hours of FFA participation in at least 3 different FFA activities (more is always encouraged!). To get an A on your grade you will need to get 10 hours and participate in a leadership role.

Event calendar is posted in Canvas and in the classroom!

Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE): 5%

Agriculture students are required to have an SAE project. This does NOT mean they have to raise an animal for fair or keep an animal at their house. An SAE project can be starting a pet sitting business, landscaping, mowing the lawn, working during harvest, creating an agriculture educating display, working in the department greenhouse, research an agriculture career and present that information, ect. This project is due in December and worked on throughout the semester. This is an opportunity for students to expand their horizons and see what the industry has to offer. Students will keep an online record book of their project(on AET) showing at least 10 hours in their project. Students will have the option to do a presentation on this project at the end of the semester to have the potential to receive an A.

Make sure the contact information is current for PARENTS and STUDENTS in Aeries Communication. We send out a large amount of reminders regarding classwork as well as FFA Activities. Grades are available through Aeries.
