Rule: Separate nonessential adjective clauses from the rest of the sentence. ** Remember, A clause is a group of words.
There are two kinds of adjective clauses:
-one that is needed for the sentence to be complete (ESSENTIAL)
-one that is NOT needed for the sentence to be complete (NONESSENTIAL)
Task: In each instance below, “Mary Roberts ran down the street” comprises the essential part of the sentence. The adjective phrases are nonessential and should be separated from the rest of the sentence with commas.
1. Mary Roberts calling out Joe’s name ran down the street.
2. Calling out Joe’s name Mary Roberts ran down the street.
3. Amazed by the noise Mary Roberts ran down the street.

The Check-in clipboard is on top of laptop cart if you would like to sign up! Agenda: Quick check-in with neighbor. How are you today? What are you planning to work on today? What are you looking forward to this week? Homework: Native Son Quiz #1 due on turnitin.com by midnight tonight (Oct. 6).
Hour 2 Expectations for Students:
- Being able to listen to music (with headphones)
- Being able to quietly talk to neighbors (5 minutes, be respectful of the time)
- Longer conversations should be in hallway, ask Ms. Koppel to sit in hallway
Hour 2 Expectations for Teacher:
- Making sure we a good amount of work time (talking limited so work time can happen) - be an available resource
- A quick overview (announcements) of the week's assignments to know what we have to do in the future.
- Have a checking sheet so that students can write their name at the beginning of class so the top priority students can check-in. Koppel. Additionally, check-in with a rotation of students.
Hour 2 Expectations for Learning:
- Quiet but not too quiet - no distracting sounds
- Everyone should be working on something
- space for people to do other activities (if possible?)
--If you have nothing to do, take a nap :)

Hour 4 Learning Environment Expectations:
Hour 4 Student/Peer Expectations
* Smaller group check-ins would be better as talking in front of the class can be stressful.
* Respecting the time given and doing work that needs to be done (or taking a break for yourself)
* When people are working it should be mostly quiet, but quick check-ins with neighbors should be allowed (limit side conversations to 5 minutes).
* Music should be allowed if you have headphones.

* Ask about working in the hallway if needed for a long period.
Hour 4 Teacher Expectations
* Check in on board (homework, etc.) at beginning of class, answers questions we have
* The clipboard or sheet where everyone writes their names is a good idea for a simple check in. (Ms. Koppel will also check in on her rotation list)
* Writing workshop available (make appointments to see Mrs. Mennitt in the writing center- media center area)

Rule: Separate a “renamer” (an appositive) from the rest of the sentence with a comma. This rule is also referred to as essential and nonessential information.
Example: Mr. Jones, the manager on the plant, is on vacation this week.
(appositive- renames Mr. Jones)
1. Ms. Koppel a Washburn English teacher has a dog named Dexter.
2. Joe Doe the man who robbed the bank was caught today.
3. Morgan Cottew a student Ms.Koppel referred to as Alex Morgan played soccer at Washburn.
