History of Nova

How did we get here

  • Way, way back there was ADS (floppys)
  • Then there was STARS ( STARS is now 15 yrs old)
  • Previous attempts to move to Ed-Fi
    • This standard is maintained by the Ed-Fi Alliance, a community of State leaders, educators, and technology leaders
  • An LEA working group was formed, and met for six weeks.
  • Overwhelming support by LEAs and Student Information System (SIS) vendors such as PowerSchool and Synergy to adopt the Ed-Fi data standard.
  • Production is LIVE!!!!! for SY23-24 data

Goals for Nova

  • Streamline data collection
    • automated submission built into the Student Information System (SIS)
  • Automate data quality checks
    • Checked at several levels (1st, 2nd, 3rd) plus reports
      • when the SIS invokes the API
      • when the data hits the ODS
      • when data is checked against other data in the ODS
    • Quality is checked throughout the entire process
  • Reduce the time to certify the data
    • Fewer data corrections will reduce resubmissions of data
    • Fewer reports to run to check data quality
