Hello

I am Todd Stanley

We used Depth and Complexity as the basis for our talent development curriculum

I have also intertwined it within lessons

The workshop will take on 3 phases

  • Phase 1: overview of the icons and what they mean.
  • Phase 2: examples of various strategies of how to incorporate the icons into your classroom.
  • Phase 3: explore for yourself why you might use these with your students and what form this might take.

4

Why use Depth and Complexity with students?

  • Makes students think about the why, not just the what
  • Pushes them to the next level
  • Provides instant differentiation for the teacher

You can use it as subtly or blatantly as you choose.

Break time – 10 minutes

At the end of the 10 minutes, I want you to write on a sticky note the first three icons that come to mind

45

How do you use the icons

Think of the icons as a vitamin boost

46

1. Teach the Icons Independently

Have projects designed to familiarize students with an icon. The understanding of this will help them to use it later on.

4. Use them when Managing Classroom

When walking around the room checking on student progress or when conferencing with students, use the icons to push their thinking more and to consider it with more depth.

59

There is an opportunity for a student to connect something they are learning to another subject area

A student is only thinking in the short term and you want them to consider how things might change

60 of 82

60

Students are having a conversation about a character’s motive and you want them to think about whether he was right or wrong

A student is getting mired down in the details and is not looking at how it all fits together

5. Have the students use them to challenge themselves/one another

If your students are often collaborating how can they challenge groupmates to take it to the next level. How does a student learn to challenge themselves?
