Centralia High School Course Catalog is designed to assist you as you plan a four-year high school course of study. It includes the requirements for high school graduation as established by the Washington State Board of Education and Centralia School District. In addition, it includes a description of courses for students to consider as they identify preliminary career interests and aspirations. The primary mission of Centralia High School is to prepare each student for success with a post-secondary plan that includes college, work and citizenship for the 21st century. The course catalog is intended to give parents and students a brief overview of the courses and learning opportunities offered at Centralia High School. The selection of courses is very important. Courses are intended to enhance college and career readiness and support students’ overall enjoyment of high school. We want to provide students a rigorous and engaging course of study, with the intent that all students are provided the necessary knowledge and experience to excel after high school.

SEAL OF BILITERACY
The Washington State Seal of Biliteracy (RCW28A.300.575) recognizes public high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in one or more world languages in addition to English. In the Centralia School District graduating seniors can earn this distinction by meeting all ELA graduation requirements and demonstrating proficiency in another world language either by earning four credits through proficiency testing.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT
This program allows students to take college-level courses, taught by high school teachers, at the high school. Courses are offered in 10th – 12th grades, and offerings vary by school. Throughout the course, students prepare for the corresponding AP exam offered in early May. Students are strongly encouraged to take the exam and will register for the exam in the fall.
Students are responsible for checking with their college(s) of interest in determining whether or not those colleges will accept AP credits.
Fees: Fees may apply

COLLEGE IN THE HIGH SCHOOL (CiHS)
College in the High School (CiHS) is a dual-credit program that allows students to simultaneously earn both high school credit and college credit while taking courses offered in high school. CiHS courses are taught by CHS instructors who are approved and trained through the university with which they have partnered
Fees: Fees may apply
COURSE EQUIVALENCIES (2 FOR 1)
Course equivalencies enable students taking Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses to satisfy two graduation requirements while earning one credit. For example, taking the Construction class earns 0.5 credit toward the 33 required for graduation AND fulfills two graduation requirements (CTE and Math). This leaves room for a student to take more classes that support their career pathway.
CTE DUAL CREDIT
The CTE Dual Credit program helps students transition from high school to post-secondary professional and technical programs. CTE programming is a cooperative effort between K-12 schools, community and technical colleges, and the business community to develop applied, integrated academic and technical programs. Courses are taught by high school teachers, at the high school.
LEARNING
OPPORTUNITIES
NCAA ELIGIBILITY
High school students who wish to participate in collegiate athletics at Division l or Division II colleges must meet academic eligibility requirements set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). You must graduate from high school having successfully completed a core curriculum. The requirements vary between Division I and Division II schools. Students and parents are encouraged to download the free guide for the college-bound student athlete from the
NCAA website.
In addition, Division I & II bound students must meet specific grade point averages and SAT or ACT score requirements. During their senior year, students register with the Clearinghouse online. There is a fee for this registration process. Furthermore, Division I and Division II bound juniors and seniors should send any ACT or SAT test scores to the NCAA Clearinghouse (Code #9999) to maintain eligibility. Test scores on a school transcript are not acceptable. Additional score report request forms for the ACT and SAT tests are available in the Counseling Center.
Students are responsible for checking with their college(s) of interest in determining whether or not those colleges will accept AP credits.

RUNNING START
Running Start (RS) is a partnership program between Washington State high schools and community colleges funded by the state legislature. RS provides high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to take college-level and tuition-free courses (other fees may apply).
Students interested in RS should begging the process of enrollment the spring of their sophomore year. CHS students can choose from Centralia College or South Puget Sound Community College.
For more information about how to apply for Running Start, see your high school counselor.
NEW MARKET SKILLS CENTER
The New Market Skills Center is located within the Tumwater School District and provides technical training to students within 13 school districts of which Centralia School District is one. The vision is to prepare students for post-secondary education, apprenticeships, or entrance into the workforce by offering the opportunity to be trained in technical career areas too expensive for a single district to fund. Students are transported to New Market from their home high schools. They spend half their day at the sending school and half at the skills center.
CENTRALIA COLLEGE OPEN DOOR PROGRAM
Open Doors is a re engagement program for older youth, ages 16-21, who have dropped out of high school or who are not expected to graduate. This program will meet our District requirements and earn a Centralia High School diploma.

COLLEGE ACADEMIC DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS (CADR)
The minimum college admission standards include three components:
1. Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
2. Take the SAT or ACT and have the scores sent directly to colleges.1
3. Complete the college academic distribution requirements.
This appendix includes detailed information about the college academic distribution requirements. Students can meet these requirements through high school coursework or college coursework.
MEETING THE CADRs THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL COURSEWORK
Identifying CADRs courses
Each school district is responsible for determining which of its high school courses meet CADR guidelines, and for ensuring that those courses are identified with "B" designations on students' transcripts. Students should consult with their local high school to obtain complete information about CADRs.
Earning Credits
Typically, students earn one credit by completing one full academic year of coursework. School districts may use alternative scheduling that permits students to earn a full credit in a given subject area in less than an academic year. School districts may also use competency-based assessments to award credit.
Course Scheduling
Students are encouraged to take a minimum of three credits of CADR courses each year of high school, including the senior year.
