What are legacy characters within superhero films?

How does this maximise audiences?

SUMMER

10 of 126

WHAT IS A LEGACY CHARACTER?

A legacy hero is a type of character, usually a superhero, that is the descendant or relative of an already or previously existing hero who either inherits or adopts the name and attributes of the original character. An example of a legacy character is Harry Osborn, the son of Green Goblin, or the most famous legacy character is when where Wally West became The Flash, after the character Barry Allen died in 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths.Wally West was one of the first true legacy characters ever.

HOW DOES THIS MAXIMISE AUDIENCES?

Legacy superheroes maximize audiences by appealing to a broad range of fans, from nostalgic long-time followers to new, younger generations. By introducing new characters who inherit the mantle of a previous hero, the franchise taps into multi-generational interest, offering diverse perspectives and backgrounds that resonate with different demographics. The narrative flexibility of legacy characters allows for fresh storylines, deep intergenerational drama, and rich world-building, all of which keep the franchise dynamic and engaging. Additionally, legacy superheroes create merchandising and branding opportunities, as multiple iterations of the same character can be marketed across different platforms. This broader appeal, combined with easier entry points for new fans, ensures long-term investment in the franchise, making legacy superheroes an effective way to expand a story's reach and keep audiences engaged over time.

The plot revolves around Shaun who is the son of Xu Wenwu the leader of the terrorist organisation called ‘the ten rings’, Shaun must confront his past as his father sends his terrorist organisation after him.

The film is part of the MCU and therefore links in with every other film that is also part of this cinematic universe. It links in with the main MCU through a character called Wong who was a major character in the Doctor Strange films and the Avengers Infinity war and Avengers Endgame.

When the comics for Shang Chi were first written in 1973 Shang Chi’s design was based on Bruce Lee, both masters of martial arts that fought shirtless.

  • In the late 1980’s a tv show for Shang Chi was in talks where Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee’s son would play the lead role, but it was never made.

Marketing Techniques(1.Posters)

Posters help market a film as the bright colours can attract and interest audiences. It can also help with ticket sales, as some posters are exclusive to ticket holders. It can excite audiences such as saying things like ‘Filmed on IMAX’ which can attract a wider audience who might want to see a film using IMAX cameras.

24 of 126

Trailers help to promote films as they give a teaser to the film and make the audience want to watch more. Youtube accounts also post reactions which help the film reach a wider audience.

Films will usually release multiple trailers, such as Shang Chi which helps to reach a wider audience and in showing more clips and scenes further interests us and makes us want to watch the entire film to learn more as trailers usually leave us on cliff-hangers or cut off the action.

2. Trailers

25 of 126

3. Television Interviews

Television interviews are another technique producers use to market their films as they feature exclusive interviews with the actor as they explain what it was like to film the movie or can sometimes react to their own scenes.

This is a good marketing strategy because it involves the audience as some of the questions may have been popular questions that fans wanted to know or behind the scenes footage can peak the interest of those who may not have wanted to watch the film before.

With actors appearing in different videos, this reaches a wider audience.

26 of 126

4-Magazines/On set articles

Many articles and magazines were made for the production and promotion of the film to help boost viewership and attract a wider audience. These can vary depending on the topics sometime referring to the production and development of the film with quotes from actors and directors or the comics and how they compare to the accuracy of the film.

Similarly, articles are made such as this one by Variety, to promote the film along with discussing topics of culture and the history of shang chi and its involvement in the Marvel universe

27 of 126

5. Premiere

Film premieres help to boost viewer counts as people talk about the film more during its premiere as it's seen as a big event or a ‘grand opening’ people don’t want to miss out on seeing a film that's popular at the moment which leads to more people watching it, an example of this is Oppenheimer and Barbie which did extremely well during its release due to it’s premiere and ‘don’t miss out’ aspect.

Pictures of the cast on the red carpet also helps as celebrity culture is common in the film industry and many people want to watch new content with their favourite actors.

7. TV spots

TV spots are times during usual shows that are interrupted to advertise another film or show. For example, Disney+ will usually advertise their own shows and films during ads.

This helps reach a wider audience as it shows clips and teasers of a film that you may not have previously wanted to watch however as the service forces you to watch a teaser of it, it may peak the interest of a few - just like how mobile advertisements work to get you to download a different game whilst your playing another game.

31 of 126

8. Social Media

Shang-Chi has it’s own twitter and instagram account which they use to post Shang-Chi content and promotional videos on. It’s especially useful before the film releases as it can build an audience and a online presence.

It helps engage the audience more and as people like, repost and comment it reaches a wider audience and this is how most films are announced - through a youtube video, instagram post or even a twitter post.

32 of 126

8. Word Of Mouth

Word of mouth is one of the most effective ways film reach a wider audience, as its fast and free for the company producing the film.

It involves consumers telling their friends, family or online audience about a film such as ‘Did you see the new film this week?’ and this helps spread the news of a new film, such as Shang-Chi.

33 of 126

9. Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten tomatoes is a website where movie fans can rate movies. It features a ‘Tomatometer’ and a ‘Audience score’ and the higher the score out of 100 the better the film was received by the audience. The tomatometer is for film critics, and is usually much harder to receive a high percentage.

This website can make or break a films reputation, as fans don’t want to watch films that are received badly or considered boring, so having a high Rotten Tomatoes score can increase the reputation of a film and encourage more people to watch it.

Main Influences For Shang-Chi

Older martial arts movies from actors such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan heavily influenced how the films style and action sequences were created.

Shang-Chi was first introduced as a comic in the 1970’s. Many aspects of the films character are the same as the comic book version.

The film integrates elements of Chinese mythology, folklore, and traditional culture. The film also explores themes of family, honour and legacy, all of which resonate with traditional Chinese values.

A significant influence on the movie was the desire to create a film that authentically represents Asian and Asian-American experiences. Director Destin Daniel Cretton, along with a predominantly Asian cast, worked to ensure that the film explored themes of cultural identity, family dynamics, and generational trauma.

A simultaneous release strategy is where a film releases on multiple platforms on the exact same day, or in very close proximity of time.

The theatrical window for a new movie is usually 40 to 50 days. After their theatrical run it is usually a three or four month wait until the film is released to buy physically or digitally.

What is distribution? The methods of which media products are delivered to audiences including marketing campaign. Distribution in media includes research and understanding of the efficacy of advertising.

Shang chi was produced by marvel studios and distributed by walt disney studios motion pictures.Shang-Chi had a theatrical-only release for the first 45 days, before being made available on Disney+ which added value to its overall revenue stream, perhaps attracting and retaining subscribers. Shang chi was distributed through theatrical release on september 3rd 2021 it was released in cinemas worldwide including north america, europe and asia this was its primary method of distribution it was also distributed through disney+ and was available to stream on disney plus two months after its theatrical release. Lastly it was also available on home media it was made available for purchase on demand and rentals

Advantages of how shang chi was distributed; the advantages of shang chi being distributed through home media are its long term revenue because after its theatrical and streaming releases the home media sales provide a sustained revenue stream for shang chi . and its extra content from physical media which will often include behind the scenes footage, deleted scenes and commentary tracks which can enhance the viewers connection with the film.

Disadvantages of how shang chi was distributed; the disadvantages of shang chi being distributed through home media is the growing shift towards digital content resulting in physical media sales decreasing so fewer people are purchasing DVDs and blu-rays affecting the physical media market which in the long term could reduce the overall impact of this distribution method.

Economic Context

42 of 126

The making of a big-budget film typically involves a wide range of advanced technologies across various stages of production. Here are some of the key technologies used:

1. Cameras and Lenses

  • Digital Cameras: hese cameras provide excellent image quality and flexibility for both practical and visual effects-heavy films.
  • 3D Cameras: For films that require stereoscopic 3D, specialized cameras
  • Lenses
  • 2. Visual Effects (VFX)
  • CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery):for creating fantastical environments, creatures, or complex action sequences
  • Motion Capture: For realistic animation of digital characters, motion capture technology records human actors' movements and translates them into digital models.

. Post-Production

  • Editing Software: Advanced editing software like Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, or Final Cut Pro are standard tools for film editing.
  • Color Grading: Software like DaVinci Resolve is used for color correction and grading to create a specific visual mood.
  • Sound Design: Technologies like Pro Tools or Avid's suite of sound design tools are used to create and mix complex soundscapes for the film.

4. Production Design

  • Virtual Production: Techniques like Unreal Engine, LED walls (e.g., Stagecraft by ILM), and real-time rendering are used for virtual sets, where actors perform in front of LED screens that display photorealistic environments. This is part of a broader shift toward "virtual production."
  • 3D Modeling and Scanning: 3D modeling software like Autodesk Maya or ZBrush is used to create digital models of sets, props, and characters. Additionally, 3D scanners can be used to capture real-world objects to replicate them digitally.

5. Sound and Music

  • Dolby Atmos: For immersive sound, Dolby Atmos is commonly used to create 3D audio in cinemas.
  • Foley Art: Creating real-world sounds through physical objects is still a staple of sound design, with the use of specialized microphones and environments.
  • Film Scoring: Music is often composed using high-end digital audio workstations (DAWs) and instruments, with orchestral recordings or electronic music depending on the film’s tone.

6. Special Effects (SFX)

  • Practical Effects: In addition to digital VFX, practical effects, such as animatronics, makeup effects, and pyrotechnics, are used for realistic interactions and on-set visuals.
  • Miniatures and Models: Some big-budget films still rely on miniatures and physical models for complex scenes that are difficult or expensive to replicate digitally.

7. Lighting and Rigging

  • Advanced Lighting: Cinematographers use various lighting technologies, such as LED panels, HMIs (Hydrargyrum Medium-arc Iodide lamps), and Fresnel lights, to achieve the right mood and exposure.
  • Rigging Systems: To move cameras, lights, and even actors during complex shots, rigging technologies such as drones, cranes, and motion control rigs are employed.

8. Computer Graphics (CG) Software

  • Maya, Blender, and 3ds Max: These are widely used for modeling, rigging, animation, and rendering in the creation of VFX-heavy scenes.
  • Autodesk Maya: One of the industry standards for 3D modeling and animation.

9. Advanced Simulation and AI

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI-driven tools can help with automating processes like rotoscoping, facial recognition, and even predicting audience reactions or refining edits.
  • Physics Simulations: Software like Houdini is used for realistic simulations of complex phenomena such as fluid dynamics, explosions, and crowds.

10. Drones and Aerial Photography

  • Drones: Used for aerial shots and capturing footage from perspectives that would otherwise be difficult or expensive to achieve, drones equipped with high-quality cameras provide unique angles and sweeping views.

11. Distribution Technology

  • 4K/8K Resolution: With the increasing push for high-definition content, films are often shot, edited, and distributed in ultra-high-definition formats.
  • Digital Cinema Package (DCP): A standardized format used for digital distribution to cinemas globally.

12. Collaboration Tools

  • Cloud-Based Tools: Filmmakers use cloud-based project management and collaboration tools to facilitate communication and ensure seamless workflows across large teams. Services like Frame.io are used for real-time collaboration on visual assets.

These technologies combine to produce the high-quality, visually stunning, and immersive experiences that audiences expect from big-budget films. The advancements in VFX, virtual production, and real-time rendering have also significantly changed how movies are made in recent years.

What are legacy characters within superhero films?

How does this maximise audiences?

SUMMER

57 of 126

71 of 126

Trailers help to promote films as they give a teaser to the film and make the audience want to watch more. Youtube accounts also post reactions which help the film reach a wider audience.

Films will usually release multiple trailers, such as Shang Chi which helps to reach a wider audience and in showing more clips and scenes further interests us and makes us want to watch the entire film to learn more as trailers usually leave us on cliff-hangers or cut off the action.

2. Trailers

72 of 126

73 of 126

4-Magazines/On set articles

Many articles and magazines were made for the production and promotion of the film to help boost viewership and attract a wider audience. These can vary depending on the topics sometime referring to the production and development of the film with quotes from actors and directors or the comics and how they compare to the accuracy of the film.

Similarly, articles are made such as this one by Variety, to promote the film along with discussing topics of culture and the history of shang chi and its involvement in the Marvel universe

74 of 126

78 of 126

79 of 126

80 of 126

89 of 126
