What are neighbors?

Neighbors are a special category of relationship.

Neighbors are our built-in community, and they can be one of our most powerful networks. We can sometimes forget this until things like a winter storm or a safety threat remind us of our interdependence.

Not family. Not always friends.

More than acquaintances.

...yet...

Why Know Your Neighbors?

As we face public health crises, climate change, rising rates of loneliness, and economic uncertainty, people are looking for community, belonging, and the

hope that they can make a difference.

Knowing our neighbors gives us a key to all three, plus:

What is Neighboring?

Neighboring is the act of intentionally connecting with the members of your geographic community for the purpose of building a culture of mutual support,

belonging, and resilience.

Modern Neighboring

We can all picture the idyllic community of Mayberry or the “old days” when kids played outside without cellphones and you walked next door to borrow a cup of sugar.

    • Find out if your community has a Neighborhood Association
    • Find out if your community has other groups
      • Online groups (Nextdoor, Buy Nothing, etc.)
      • Special interest groups (Parenting group, Safety Team)
    • Meet your immediate neighbors
      • Know Your Five Front Doors Challenge
      • Start a text thread with your block
    • Host something—it can be simple, like a backyard BBQ
    • Ask for help from a neighbor
    • Learn more about Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)
