WHAT IS HMS SCITEAM?

  • Team of ~30 HMS students of all grades
    • Team A (15): made up of the team’s strongest performers
    • Team B (15)
  • Admission to team by testing only
  • Learn science “events” outside school curriculum, compete against other middle schools, and have fun!

Build Events

  • Team of two to three participants
  • Construct a device following specific event parameters and test the device against others
  • Examples include Helicopter, Mission Possible, and Scrambler

    • In-person at another school, tests taken in a classroom alongside teams from other schools.

PART 1

  • Fill out our application form
    • Complete before the entrance test (September 4th after school!!)
    • List extracurriculars and rank interest in science disciplines

APPLICATION PROCESS

PART 2

  • Entrance Test is 1.5 hours, expect to be at school from 4-5:30 pm
    • you may use 2:50-3:45 as a study/review period
    • questions on biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, math, and experimental design
    • Mostly multiple choice, some free response questions
    • 2 sheets double-sided (4 pages) of A4 size cheat sheets are allowed during test, typed or handwritten with information (text and/or images) from any source
    • Scientific calculator allowed
  • Scores will be compared within grade levels.
    • generally 40-50% for 6th, 60-70% for 7th, 65-75% for 8th
    • 100% not expected, test changes every year

  • Computer – School Chromebooks required
  • Pencil, eraser, scratch paper
  • Scientific calculator preferred (no graphing calculators)
  • Cheat sheets with notes (highly recommended)

  • Scores compared within grade levels
  • Dedication, hard work, perseverance, attitude
  • General team: list of ~30 students will be released after entrance test
  • Exact roster will be decided later in the season after event-specific testing
