By Andrew Ursu

My personal experience with learning disabilities

  • Throughout school I sometimes noticed that it took me longer and more effort to complete certain exams and assignments
  • Was found to have a learning disability
  • Had accommodations both in high school and in university that gave me extra time on exams
  • Am concerned about how to properly communicate and convey my potential needs to others in the workplace

The Tech Interview Process

  • Tech interviews in 2024 tend to be a highly technical and sometimes stressful process across multiple interview rounds
  • For programming positions this can involve coding solutions to complex algorithmic problems in real time
  • Candidates may also be asked detailed theoretical questions regarding various concepts such as databases, networking and security
  • Occasionally they may also be asked to design a software system on paper (e.g. Design Netflix)

Interview Challenges for those with Learning Disabilities

  • Many of the interview questions listed on the previous slide can be challenging even for those without any disabilities
  • For those with learning disabilities like myself it can be even more challenging if given the standard amount of time
  • Some candidates such as myself worry about disclosing a disability and asking for accommodations
  • Could potentially be used against us down the line if we reveal said disability

Potential Solutions

  • Some companies have ways to request accommodations built into their recruitment process
  • Require/encourage all companies to encourage those with disabilities to request accommodations
  • Train interviewers to check their biases on disabilities and other EDI issues

Navigating the workplace

  • Once someone with learning disabilities enters the workplace they should be treated with respect
  • Managers need to be trained to work with individuals with disabilities
  • Individuals with disabilities need to feel empowered to advocate for themselves without fear of being judged by colleagues
  • Need more general education and attention to helping those with disabilities succeed in the workplace

Conclusions

  • More awareness is needed for learning disabilities in the workplace and in Tech
  • Training is needed on both the interview and in workplace side
  • People with learning disabilities need to feel comfortable sharing their disabilities and potential need for accommodations
