Gustar

• You already know that to express our like or dislike of something, we use the verb gustar:

Me gusta dibujar.

No me gusta estudiar.

No me gusta comer la pizza.

Gustar

• We know how to say “I like”, but what if we want to talk about the likes of other people?

• Can you write the following?
• We like to eat ice cream
• You(familiar) like practice sports.
• You (formal) like to read.
• They like to listen to music.
• I like to study.
• You guys like to learn Spanish.

1. Nos gusta comer el helado.
2. Te gustan los deportes.
3. Le gusta leer.
4. Les gusta escuchar música.
5. Me gusta estudiar.
6. Les gusta aprender el español.

Gustar

• Sometimes when we use le or les, it’s difficult to tell who exactly we are talking about.

le gusta correr=could mean he likes to run, she likes to run, you formal (ud.) like to run.

• How can we clarify who the le or les refers to?🡪by using an (A + persona)!

Gustar

• (A + persona) does not always have to be used, but it helps us be certain exactly who we are talking about.
• The “persona” can be a name (Paco) or a subject pronoun (él).

(A Paco) le gusta leer.

(A ellos) les gusta beber los refrescos.

Gustar

• We can use an (A + persona) with any sentence, it is just not always necessary.

(A nosotros) nos gusta dibujar.

• We did not need the “a nosotros” to know who likes to draw, but it just makes it very clear.
• Me and te have special (A + personas).

(A mí) me gusta leer. (A ti) te gusta leer.

Gustar

• There are other verbs that work the same way: encantar, importar, interesar, aburrir, and all conjugate like gustar.
• Me encanta comer
• Te encanta leer.
• A Señora Darling le interesa aprender el español.
• Nos aburre estudiar.
