AM Realm/STEAM Shuttle Expectations

7th Athletics Only

Expectations for Shuttle Riders

  • Teachers will dismiss students riding the shuttle to their home campuses at 8:57 AM to catch the shuttle.
  • Students should be at the bus location when the bus arrives.
  • The bus will shuttle will depart Hughes Middle School at 9:03 AM. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure he/she is at the shuttle location on time.

Missing the Shuttle

  • If a student misses the shuttle they will have to contact a parent to come and take them to their home campus.
  • If a student misses the shuttle on multiple occasion that student may lose the privilege of participating in extracurricular activities at Hughes Middle School.

Arrival

  • Morning Procedures
    • 7:45 AM: Side entrances will be open to students.

Buses on Westside (Tennis court side) Cars on Eastside (Tree Line side)

    • Students will need to report to 1st period classroom when they enter the building.
    • If student is wanting breakfast:
      • Car riders will walk through the line in the cafeteria and then go eat their breakfast in their first period class.
      • Bus Riders will pick up their breakfast at the concession stand in the back hallway and then go eat in their first period class.
    • 8:10 AM: Breakfast Serving Lines Close
    • 8:15 AM: Breakfast thrown away and first period begins.

Arrival

  • Parent Drop Off
    • Parents will enter the campus from Murphy Drive and travel to Thomas drive on the East End of campus.
    • Drop off begins at 7:45AM when the East End entrance unlocks.
  • Bus/Before School Bus or Van Drop Off
    • Buses will begin unloading at 7:45AM from the West End parking lot when the West End entrance unlocks.
  • Bike Arrival and Placement
    • Bike racks are located in the back by the bus lane. Once bike riders secure their bikes, students will enter HMS at the West End entrance.
  • Walker Arrival
    • Walkers may use the East End and West End HMS entrances beginning at 7:45AM.

  2. Traffic will split into three lanes near building
  3. Middle lane is for continuous flow
  4. Lanes of traffic will merge to two at exit

Bicycles/Skateboards

  • Bicycles should be parked in bicycle racks on the west side (by bus lane) of the school. All bicycles should be locked as the school assumes no responsibility for loss or damage. Due to safety concerns, bicycles and skateboards may not be used on school property. Walk with them until off campus property. .

Announcements

  • Morning announcement procedures
    • During 2nd period, all students will listen quietly to the announcements provided by the HMS administrative staff.
  • Pledges
    • All students will remain quiet during the pledges to the American and Texas flags. It is expected but not required for all students to stand, face the flags, cross their hearts, and recite the pledges.
  • Moment of Silence
    • All students will remain silent during the state required Moment of Silence as led by the HMS administrative and teaching staff.
  • Respect the Speaker
    • While it is not required to actively participate in the routines of the announcements, it is required to respect the presenter and those who do participate.

Hallway Transitions and Expectations

  • Students are expected to wear their masks at all times
  • Students are expected to social distance at six feet apart at all times.
  • Students are expected to follow all one way directional hallways.
  • The rules to respect of each other also apply in the hallways. There are, however, some very specific rules which must be followed to keep the halls safe. They are not limited to the following:
  • All students are expected to walk quietly and quickly through the halls. Quiet talk is permitted, but yelling and screaming are not acceptable
  • Hall passes are required at all times except during passing periods.
  • There will be a two minute passing time between periods. Tones will sound at the beginning and at the end of each period. Teachers, not the tones, dismiss the students.

Restroom Info

  • During passing periods students are not to use the restrooms as we can not monitor social distancing. We have built in bathroom breaks for each class throughout the day to allow for students to go to the bathroom.
  • If a student needs to use the restroom during your class when it is not during the alloted time for them to go then they will need to go to the bathroom in the 7th and 8th grade den.

Extracurricular & Event Behavior Expectations

  • Throughout the year, students will be given the opportunity to attend school events. At all times the students should be respectful and display appropriate behavior. Unacceptable behavior will result in removal from the event, the possibility of not allowed to attend future events and further disciplinary action may follow.

Attendance

Attendance will be recorded each day from each teacher at each period. �Attendance includes tardies and absences.

  • Tardy - Entering any class after the designated start bell
    • Students who are not in class at the designated start time are considered tardy.
    • 1st period - Students are required to enter with a pass from the office if they are tardy.
    • 2nd-7th periods - Students are required to enter classrooms with a pass from the office if they are initially arriving at school or returning from an outside appointment if they are tardy.
    • 2nd-7th periods - Students are required to enter classrooms with a pass from their previous classroom teacher if they are tardy.
  • Absent - Not in class at the designated time
    • Students who do not attend classes are considered “absent” if reported through the HMS office. “Absences” are considered a state reported occurrence.
    • Students who do not attend classes are considered unexcused “skipping” if absence is not reported through the HMS office. “Skipping” is considered a punishable offense.

Bullying Policy

  • Bullying is defined in state law as a single significant act or a pattern of acts by one or more students directed at another student that exploits an imbalance of power and involves engaging in written or verbal expression, expression through electronic means, or physical conduct that:
    • Has the effect or will have the effect of physically harming a student, damaging a student’s property, or placing a student in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s person or of damage to the student’s property;
    • Is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive enough that the action or threat creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for a student;
    • Materially and substantially disrupts the educational process or the orderly operation of a
    • classroom or school; or
    • Infringes on the rights of the victim at school.

Bullying

  • Bullying includes cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is defined by state law as bullying that is done

through the use of any electronic communication device, including through the use of a cellular or other type of telephone, a computer, a camera, electronic mail, instant messaging, text messaging, a social media application, an internet website, or any other internet-based

communication tool.

  • The district is required to adopt policies and procedures regarding:
    • Bullying that occurs on or is delivered to school property or to the site of a school-

sponsored or school-related activity on or off school property;

    • Bullying that occurs on a publicly or privately owned school bus or vehicle being used for transportation of students to or from school or a school-sponsored or school-related

activity; and

  • Cyberbullying that occurs off school property or outside of a school-sponsored or school-related activity if the cyberbullying interferes with a student’s educational opportunities or substantially disrupts the orderly operation of a classroom, school, or school-sponsored or school-related activity.

Bullying

  • If a student believes that he or she has experienced bullying or has witnessed bullying of another student, it is important for the student or parent to notify a teacher, school counselor, principal, or another district employee as soon as possible to obtain assistance and intervention. The administration will investigate any allegations of bullying or other related misconduct. The district will also provide notice to the parent of the alleged victim and the parent of the student alleged to have engaged in bullying. A student may anonymously report an alleged incident of bullying online at

Dismissal (Bus Riders)

  • Bus Riders
    • All Bus Riders will be given a slip of paper in their 7th period class that has their bus number on the pass.
    • At 3:40 teachers will display the dismissal sheet for their 8th period classes. When students bus arrives the bus numbers will be placed on that form at that time. When students bus number pops up the student will go directly to their bus which is located outside doors by competition gym.
    • Please go directly to bus because buses will be sent as soon as they are loaded.
    • At 4:00 all remaining bus riders will be brought to the 8th grade hallway where they will sit 6ft apart with their mask on, and wait for the bus to arrive.

Dismissal (Car Riders)

  • Parent Pick-Up
    • Parents will enter the campus from Murphy Drive and travel to Thomas drive on the East End of campus.
    • At 3:40 teachers will display the dismissal sheet for their 8th period class students names will be typed in order as parents arrive. When the bell rings teachers will release round 1 students to go get in lines by their cone colored and numbered cone outside of A123 (Choir Room). When round 1 students have departed from campus we will call for round 2 students over PA to come down and begin lining up.
    • Students are to continue wearing their masks until safely in their vehicle.
    • At 4:00 all remaining car riders will be brought to the cafeteria to be seated at 6 ft apart.

Dismissal (Walkers & Bike Riders)

  • Walkers and bike riders will be dismissed at 3:43 and need to immediately exit the building and head off campus. Students are not to linger or congregate outside or in the hallways.
  • Students need to remain socially distanced with their mask on until they exit the building.

Bus Behavior

  • The Student Code of Conduct applies to students who ride the bus. The bus driver sets the standards for students behavior on the bus. Students who do not comply with the rules and any other specific regulations established by the bus driver, while on the bus, or walking to or from the bus, will be disciplined, and may be suspended from riding on the bus.
  • All students must wear masks the entire time while riding the bus.
