Reading Improvement for Student Excellence

Distinctive Brand. Strong Leaders. Great Schools.

  1. Early Reading Skills - Partner with stakeholders to improve early reading skills through the Zero to Five Initiative.
  2. Foundational Reading Skills - Emphasis on learning to read in K-2 which include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
  3. Disciplinary Literacy Skills - With an emphasis on reading to learn, these skills in grades 3-12 include reading, writing and communicating across all disciplines.

Lexile Measures

  • Each student will receive a Lexile measure from their i-Ready Diagnostic assessment. This score describes the student’s reading ability.

  • A Lexile measure represents both a child’s reading ability and the complexity of a text, such as a book or magazine article.

  • When your child reads text within his or her Lexile range, he or she is likely to comprehend enough of the text to make sense of it, while still being sufficiently challenged to maintain interest and learning.

ELA Curriculum

  • Grades K-2 - Orton Gillingham is used for foundational skills in order for students to become skilled readers.
  • Includes 5 part lessons that breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds
  • Students learn language by ear (listening), mouth (speaking), eyes (seeing), and hand (writing).

  • Reading and Writing Workshops focus on teaching the critical skills and strategies students need to be highly competent thinkers, readers, and writers.

Science Vision for Learning
