Reading Improvement for Student Excellence

Distinctive Brand. Strong Leaders. Great Schools.

Early Reading Skills - Partner with stakeholders to improve early reading skills through the Zero to Five Initiative.
Foundational Reading Skills - Emphasis on learning to read in K-2 which include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Disciplinary Literacy Skills - With an emphasis on reading to learn, these skills in grades 3-12 include reading, writing and communicating across all disciplines.

Lexile Measures

Each student will receive a Lexile measure from their i-Ready Diagnostic assessment. This score describes the student’s reading ability.

A Lexile measure represents both a child’s reading ability and the complexity of a text, such as a book or magazine article.

When your child reads text within his or her Lexile range, he or she is likely to comprehend enough of the text to make sense of it, while still being sufficiently challenged to maintain interest and learning.

ELA Curriculum

Grades K-2 - Orton Gillingham is used for foundational skills in order for students to become skilled readers.
Includes 5 part lessons that breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds
Students learn language by ear (listening), mouth (speaking), eyes (seeing), and hand (writing).

5 parts

3 part drill and vowel intensive- teaches sound symbol relationships
Teaching a new concept - introduces the skills students need to read. Includes finger tapping when writing words and pounding when writing sentences
Red Words- composed of irregular words and high frequency words. Arm tapping is used.
Syllabication- division of words
Language Comprehension- use of decodable readers and other literature. Once students learn to read, the focus shifts towards fluency, building vocabulary, and background knowledge to help students comprehend what they hear and read.

The purpose of the Young Georgia Authors (YGA) writing competition is to encourage students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing, to provide a context to celebrate their writing successes, and to recognize student achievement in arts and academics.The competition will take place at the school level in December/January. Winners from each school will go on to compete in the district competition. The district winners will compete against other district winners in our RESA.

Reading and Writing Workshops focus on teaching the critical skills and strategies students need to be highly competent thinkers, readers, and writers.

Includes a variety of fiction and nonfiction text to challenge students’ thinking.

Each and every student in the State of Georgia should be provided opportunities to:

become confident in using mathematics to analyze and solve problems both in school and in real-life situations as they recognize that mathematics permeates the world around us.

develop the knowledge and skills, including academic language, symbols and notation of mathematics, and attitudes necessary to pursue further studies in mathematics.

develop abstract, logical, and critical thinking and the ability to reflect critically upon their work and the work of others.

develop a critical appreciation of the use of information and communication technology in mathematics.

appreciate the international dimension of mathematics and its multicultural and historical perspectives.

Students need numbers to be set in context. In ways that they may see it applied outside of school in the world around them.
The classroom lessons and instruction should cultivate a deep love for math and problem solving.
Students should continue to assess, reflect, and correct their work and the work of others through collaborative positive relationships.
Students should be continually exposed to technology and its use in the world around them. We know that technology and the rest of the world are advancing at such a rapid rate. Jobs of the future will require and advanced level of mathematical reasoning and application, as well as data analysis and statistical reasoning and comprehension.
As we prepare students to be contributing members in a global society, we hope to grow their appreciation and empath for the international dimension and its multicultural and historical perspectives.

Science Vision for Learning

The vision for science instruction in Griffin Spalding County Schools is to produce science literate learners who actively engage in authentic learning experiences that challenge them to make sense of the natural and designed world through questioning, investigating, problem solving and arguing in order to develop critical thinking skills through student agency and ownership.
