Friction Prediction

2 of 10

PURPOSE

THE PURPOSE OF THIS EXPERIMENT IS TO DETERMINE WHICH SANDPAPERS’ TEXTURE, (TO BE USED AS A ROAD- FINE, MEDIUM & VERY ROUGH,) WILL HAVE THE BEST FRICTION TO STOP A DERBY CAR COMING DOWN ON A RAMP.

HYPOTHESIS

IF I ROLL A CAR ON THE ROUGH TEXTURED SAND PAPER, AS OPPOSED TO THE FINE AND MEDIUM TEXTURED SANDPAPER, THEN I THINK THE CAR ON THE ROUGH TEXTURED SANDPAPER WILL THE TRAVEL THE FARTHEST.

MATERIALS

1. Lego Car

2. Cardboards for building a ramp

3. Sandpaper (Fine, Medium and Rough)

4. Measuring Tape (to measure distance traveled by the lego car)

5. Protractor (to measure the angle of the ramp)

6. Science Journal, Pencil and Eraser

7. Scissors, tape and Glue.

PROCEDURE

1. First, make a hypothesis and test the hypothesis.

2. Gather all materials needed for the experiment.

3. Build a ramp out of cardboard. Place the different sandpaper at the bottom of the ramp. Use a protractor to measure the angle of the ramp (30 degrees.)

4. Proceed with testing the car. Put the car on top of the ramp and release the car down the ramp into the different textured sandpaper. Do this procedure 3 times.

5. Record the data in a notebook.

6. Make a conclusion.

7. Apply this experiment in real world application.

CONCLUSION

AFTER THREE TRIALS, THE DATA GATHERED SHOWED THAT I WAS WRONG. THE CAR TRAVELED THE SHORTEST IN THE ROUGH TEXTURED SANDPAPER AS OPPOSED TO MY HYPOTHESIS THAT THE CAR WILL TRAVEL THE FARTHEST IN ROUGH TEXTURED SANDPAPER. ALSO, SURPRISINGLY, THE CAR TRAVELED THE FARTHEST IN THE MEDIUM TEXTURED SANDPAPER INSTEAD OF THE FINE TEXTURED SANDPAPER.

REAL WORLD APPLICATION

THIS EXPERIMENT IS IMPORTANT AS IT CAN BE FURTHER STUDIED BY TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS TO MAKE OUR ROADS SAFER BY USING DIFFERENT KIND OF CONCRETE TEXTURE FOR AIRPORT RUNWAYS, STEEP MOUNTAIN ROADS, SNOW AND RAIN PRONE ROADS.
