Dr. Fu engaged in sports medicine when he was the team physician for Mt. Lebanon High School Football team. During his first game, a player fractured his femur and Dr. Fu held the player’s leg in alignment for 30 minutes until an ambulance arrived. After the incident, Dr. Fu addressed the importance of assembling emergency medical personnel on site for high school games and had launched a high school athletic training program to serve schools throughout Western Pennsylvania. Under his leadership UPMC eventually expanded high school sports medicine from sideline care to include physical therapy, injury prevention and concussion testing.

Dr. Fu founded the sports medicine program at Pitt in 1986 and it has since grown into one of the most prominent clinical – research programs and training grounds in the world for primary sports medicine doctors, surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers, nutritionists and neuropsychologists.
