About Me:

Welcome to “Back to School” night. I wish I could be in my classroom to greet you all and discuss how wonderful your son/daughter have been in the first few weeks of school. Below are some interesting points about me:

  • I have taught at Maria Carrillo for 23 years - I have taught all of the courses offered in our Social Science curriculum - currently AP United States History and Psychology.
  • I have been the Athletic Director for the previous 16 years.
  • I have coached the following sports: Men’s Basketball (16 years), Women’s Basketball (2 years), Baseball (3 years), and Women’s Golf (6 years)
  • I am also married to fellow English teacher Natasha Deakins

AP United States History

AP United States History is a year long course that examines our nation’s history from early exploration through modern American issues/crisis. The course is designed to allow students to showcase their knowledge in various mediums.

Textbook: The American Pageant, 17th edition

Student Expectations:

  • Read, write, research, and solve problems independently
  • Work in groups to solve problems and apply concepts discussed and researched
  • Critical thinking techniques will be introduced and developed within the class content so students can become proficient and apply them to historical issues
  • Daily writing notes, practice strategies for essay preparation, and guided practice
  • Demonstrate an effective use of analytical skills of evaluation, cause and effect relationships, and compare and contrast historical themes
  • Interpret and draw conclusions from various pieces of historical data including primary and secondary documents, political cartoons, and graphs

AP Grading

AP United States History is evaluated based on the following categories.

  • Exams and Essays = 60% of grade
  • Notes, Classwork, and Homework = 30% of grade
  • Quizzes = 10% of grade

All grades are identified on both Google Classroom and Aeries

Introduction to Psychology

This introductory course examines Psychology and its uses through an overview of psychological interpretations, methods and stages of human and behavioral development. During this course students will have the opportunity to learn about human behavior and cognitive development, as well as provide the opportunity to examine their own behavioral patterns, learning and personality traits through the study of psychological theories.

Course is an elective and homework is minimal with most work being done in class. Grading is based on the students total point divided by points possible.
