Do you know what this means?
You will.
“Why is a librarian talking to me about copying on the Internet?”
The greatest library in the world was built from copies.
And piracy. Literally piracy.
“It is widely reported that upon entering the Alexandrian harbor, ships were inspected, and any books they were carrying were seized.[92] A copy was made and given to the original owner, but the original was kept for the Great Library.[93] It was through such means that the Great Library amassed its large collection.[94]”
Is this stealing?
Or copying?
By the way, libraries still do this sort of ‘collection development’ today!
Legally!
Why are libraries allowed to lend books?
Aren’t publishers mad about that?
We can’t stop you from flipping water bottles.
Publishers can’t stop us (or you) from lending print books.
But what about ebooks?
What prevents libraries from buying ebooks and placing them on a server to share?
Would that be copying?
Would it be stealing?
Would it be piracy?
Ebooks are not bought.
They are licensed.

“Hold on. This presentation is filled with images from the Internet.
Are you showing me stolen goods?
Is this more librarian piracy?”

When I use the Internet, my browser downloads a copy of a webpage to my computer.
Is this piracy?
