Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)

  • Students attend college classes at any participating MN college or university just like a regular college student
  • Full-time or part-time
    • Full-time PSEO means taking zero classes at the high school and any number of courses at the college. Full-time enrollment status is defined by the college and varies by campus (usually 12-18 credits). Part-time PSEO refers to a student who takes any combination of courses between the high school and the college.
  • On-campus or online (or both)
  • Students must have at least one open hour on their DHS schedule in order to go PSEO
  • Tuition, fees, textbooks/course materials are all paid for
  • Students order their own materials and books - work with your college advisor
  • Students are responsible for housing and transportation
    • Families who meet income guidelines may be eligible for mileage reimbursement
  • PSEO students are not eligible for financial aid and scholarships while they attend via PSEO

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)

  • Students are eligible to be involved in all DHS extra-curricular activities and events, and have reasonable access to DHS to work on classes
  • Students and a parent must meet with their counselor to go over PSEO expectations and to ensure they’re taking the right PSEO classes to fulfill their DHS requirements
  • All aspects of the course registration, transcripts, tutoring, curriculum, student needs, and attendance are through the college
  • PSEO students generate a college transcript at the college they attend
  • Course and grades are transferred back onto their DHS transcript
  • Student is responsible for ensuring we receive their transcript/grades in a timely manner
  • DHS communicates with PSEO students via their DHS e-mail and the Daily Bulletin regarding important student information, such as graduation, scholarships, college rep visits, etc.
  • If a student wishes to pursue a High Honors diploma while attending PSEO, they must have course syllabi approved by DHS Department Chairs of that subject area

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)

Eligibility:

  • Eligibility requirements are set by the individual college
    • Look on a college’s website under their admissions section – most have PSEO-specific information there
  • 10th graders are able to take PSEO classes in a limited capacity if they meet admission criteria
    • The student must have received a passing score (proficiency level of “meets or exceeds”) on the 8th grade Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) in reading. If the student did not take the 8th grade MCA, another reading assessment can be substituted if accepted by the enrolling postsecondary institution.
    • One career & technical education class first semester at participating colleges. A student who enrolls in a single eligible CTE course during the first semester of their 10th grade year and receives a “C” or better may enroll in additional postsecondary courses in the subsequent semester.
  • Students will apply directly to the college according to their procedure. Typically this will include:
    • College’s application for PSEO admission
    • DHS transcript - sent by your counselor
    • MDE Notice of Student Registration form (send to counselor for completion of school section)
  • Deadline to notify DHS of intent to enroll in PSEO in 2023-24 school year is May 30th, 2023 (This includes enrollment for spring semester).

Graduation/Transcript/Post-High School Implications

  • CIS and PSEO grades will reflect on both the student’s high school and college transcript.
    • Watch your GPA and attend all classes. Remember that these grades will be a permanent part of your college transcript and will follow you through college graduation.
  • PSEO and CIS students are considered college students and should take ownership of their applications and communication with the college and the high school. Colleges will not be able to communicate with parents regarding student grades and attendance unless a FERPA waiver is signed.
  • College AND high school emails must be checked on a daily basis, even if the student is not attending DHS in-person.
  • Graduation requirements must be met through PSEO classes being taken. Students need to contact their Counselor before PSEO registration to understand what is needed.

14 of 16

Graduation/Transcript/Post-High School Implications

  • PSEO students should keep track of add/drop deadlines. If students withdraw (W) from a class after the add/drop deadline, the W is considered an “F” on their high school transcript.
  • All PSEO class changes must be discussed with the student’s counselor first.
  • Make sure all credits are received by the high school prior to graduation
    • Diplomas can only be given out after we receive official transcripts
    • All transcript grades must be reported on the official transcript
  • Students will need to request official transcripts from their CIS or PSEO institution to be sent to their college. Students are responsible for transcript fees through the colleges.
