Warm Up

In your Daily Journal, silently write one paragraph answer the following prompt:

Warm Up: Jury Duty

The U.S. has a common law system, which means that legal decisions are made through a series of courts. In the U.S. and most common law systems, some cases are heard by a jury. However, other countries have a civil law or religious law system, where few decisions are heard by a jury.

Is trial by jury a fair system to judge a legal case? Why or why not? Is there a fairer legal system?

Watch: Twelve Angry Men Act III

  1. The first draft of Twelve Angry Men was written for television in 1954. Based on the success of the TV show, playwright Reginald Rose and actor Henry Fonda adapted Twelve Angry Men into a movie, which was a critical success but box office disappointment. At that time, it was very likely that a jury would consist entirely of white males.

Imagine that your are producing a new movie version of Twelve Angry Men updated to reflect America today. Cast all the jurors in Twelve Angry Men that would represent America in 2020. For each juror, please write the actor’s name, gender, ethnicity, and age as well as a short paragraph explaining why you would cast this actor in the updated version of Twelve Angry Men.

Twelve Angry Men Act III Questions

Jennifer Lopez, also known as JLo. 51 years old. Female.

In the original 12 Angry Men script, Juror #10 was described as an “angry, bitter man” and a bigot. In the remake of 12 Angry Men, the Latina actress Jennifer Lopez would be cast as Juror #10 so that half the jurors would be female, but also to add representation of Hispanics, which account for nearly 20% of America’s population today. In the remake, Juror #10 would be an angry, bitter 40-something-year-old woman, who has been beaten down in life. She never graduated from high school and has been stuck in low-paying, dead end jobs. She is currently working as a security guard in Manhattan. Her parents encourage her to go back to school to earn a GED, but she can’t be bothered with it.
