Overview of an FRC Match

Alliances

  • In each match there are 6 robots on the field at one time, divided into two alliances.
  • 3 on the red alliance & 3 on the blue alliance, one alliance of teams wins each match.
  • These robots are all built by seperate teams, meaning teams must work together to try to win each of their matches.
  • The robots’ bumper colors match which alliance they are on.

Pre-Match

  • Prior to the start of each match teams prepare their robot and driver station.
    • In some games, teams may load a specified number of game objects into their robot before the match begins.
  • Teams carry their robots onto the field and position their robots and power them on.
  • Teams take their driver stations to the field and connect them.
  • Teams and volunteers verify that the field is completely reset and ready for play.

Autonomous Mode

  • Robot operates under pre-programmed instructions
  • The drivers may not touch their controls
  • In many games the robots need to move from their starting location and score game pieces to score points.
  • Point values for objects scored in autonomous mode are often increased compared to the rest of the match.

Driver Control

  • The majority of the match is Driver Control
  • Here the teams’ drivers remotely control their robot from the sides of the field.
  • Drivers’ may use cameras mounted on the robot to help them control the robot.
  • Teams’ may automate tasks during this portion of the match as well.
    • This may include automated aiming or scoring functions.

End Game

  • The End Game is last portion of the drive control period where specific end game tasks are completed.
  • Often the End Game involves positioning the robot in some way or having the robot climb a specific field element.

Post Match

  • Once the match time is complete teams must take their driver station and robot off the field.
  • The final scores are confirmed once the Head Referee confirms them and they are displayed to the audience.
