About the field site: Korail -

  • Korail is one of the largest slums in Bangladesh.
  • Most residents migrated from some of the poorest parts of Bangladesh.
  • Majority of Korail’s inhabitants live below the poverty line and work in extremely low-income jobs.
  • Between 2007 and 2008, a many slum dwellers relocated to Korail
  • As a result, living conditions and delivery of health and education services worsened

In the field -

  • First walk around the Korail slum and observe to get a sense of the environment
  • Establish “rapport” - try and make the selected Korail participants comfortable and at ease when you begin to ask focused questions on your topic

  • Do not judge – remain open
  • Be an active listener
  • Be respectful – in your attire, attitude, and when conducting interviews
