Student Personal Device Use

Personal devices may not be seen, heard, or be a distraction.
Smart watches may be worn during the student day.
Staff discretion is used on field trips.
School administrators may authorize use of a personal device in rare instances (mainly emergencies).

1^st violation: Device is confiscated. Student picks up at end of the day.
All other violations: Device is confiscated. Parent/guardian must pick up.
Personal devices for assistive technology may be used as defined in an IEP/504/Health Plan.

Receiving Emails and Texts

Utilizing contact information submitted through the Family File, parents and guardians automatically receive emails from HCPSS and our school.

To comply with FCC & wireless carrier requirements, parents/guardians must opt in one time to receiving text message alerts. To opt in or confirm sign up, text the word “YES” to 67587 from the mobile number on file in HCPSS Connect Family File.

Unsubscribing to either an HCPSS or school email, will remove you from receiving all email messaging—including emergency notifications!

Please call the front office if you believe you are not receiving emails and/or text messages.

Parents receive news and announcements from our school and system via the HCPSS News service. Parents are automatically registered for this service when they complete their Family File.

Email messages are delivered to the email address listed in a parent’s Family File. Note that both emergency and non-emergency messages go to the primary email address listed in Family File. Only emergency messages will be sent to secondary email address.

HCPSS News weekly newsletter, providing news and upcoming events.
Emergency notifications (school closings/delays).

Text messages: Parents have the option to receive text messages. Texts are sent only for urgent/emergency announcements (school closings and delays, etc.)

New parents must opt-in to text alerts by texting “yes” to 67587 from the mobile phone listed in their Family File. If they do not receive a confirmation message, they should go to https://www.hcpss.org/hcpss-news/faq/ for information on how to troubleshoot.
Text alerts will be sent to the mobile phone number identified in Family File.
If you were opted-in to receive text messages last year, and your phone number has not changed, you do not need to opt-in again.

Students whose families do not qualify for free or reduced priced lunch will be required to pay full price.

Contact Liaisons and counselors if you need support completing these applications. FARMs enrollment is confidential. Students whose families are in the program are not identified in any way.

Qualification is based on family size and income.

Go to www.hcpss.org/farms for more information, to see if you qualify, and to apply.

I want to remind families that the federal government will no longer provide funding for universal free meals, as they did during the pandemic.

As a result, students whose families do not qualify for free or reduced lunch will be required to pay the daily meal price. Families can visit our website to view meal prices.

I strongly encourage all Howard County families to apply for the FARMs program. The application is open now and available on our website. Parents and guardians must submit a new application each year.

In addition to providing the BOE with feedback, the CAC helps disseminate information about HCPSS to the public.
Representatives of the CAC sit on various policy reviews and education initiative committees in order to share our concerns, offer constructive solutions, and later provide feedback to the BOE.
CAC meetings are open to anyone in the community who wishes to participate.

Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee

A parent-driven advisory council advocating for special education issues in HCPSS.
Collaborates with community groups to enhance special education services and outcomes.
