Program Logistics

  • Charger and lock will be provided
  • Fitted with a tracking device to locate it if lost or stolen
  • Students are financially responsible for the device and accessories
  • Students are responsible for covering all damages, loss of items, and repairs
  • Financial assistance for repair or replacement may be provided based on household income (case by case)

Infrastructure Changes

  • Adding more areas to lock the scooters would improve and lower the risk of scooters being stolen.
  • Adding at least one of these to every college would help prevent theft.
  • Expansions to the current bike paths may be necessary to support the growing number of scooters on campus.
  • This will help students save money such as: not spending money on a parking pass which costs about $100 a month, spend less on gas which on average costs about $150- $200.
  • There is a shortage of parking spots, students utilizing the provided scooters to get to class will not have to worry about parking on campus.

Next Steps

  • Source funding and/or sponsorships for the scooters
  • Propose this project to the commute service center
  • Present at Alumni events
  • Look into execution of expanding the bike paths and campus layout to support this project safely
  • Research the legal side of this program

Logistical Cost

  • Scooters would be given to students one week before school starts
  • Each scooter would cost UCSD approximately $500
  • Each Lock will cost around $30
  • Charger would cost about $20
  • GPS tracker cost around $16 and will allow students to track their scooters off their phone
  • Return scooters at the end of the year
  • Estimate cost 15 million dollars
