Master of Education (M.Ed.)

& Teaching Credential

M.Ed./Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential

  • MS-1: 13 months (includes the MS-2 portion)
    • Starts in Summer (mid-June)
    • Summer Intensive portion involves coursework & fieldwork (course schedule will vary)
    • Must advance to the 2nd portion (MS-2)
  • MS-2: 10 months
    • Must have completed the EDS Foundations coursework as a UCSD UG to be eligible
    • Starts in late August - “early” Fall quarter (so you must be a Spring or Summer graduate)!
    • Coursework primarily in evenings & Student Teaching during the day

EMEC (Elementary Math Education Concentration) is available to all MS MEd/Credential students.

Bilingual Authorization (BILA) in Spanish is available to all MEd/Credential students.

*Both programs are 100% in person (w/the possible exception of a class or two), considered full-time, and we do not recommend working while in either program!

General Requirements:

1. Online application

2. Academic Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree
    • min. 3.0 GPA

3. Transcripts - Must have your legal name!

    • Reqd. from all institutions attended after HS
    • Unofficial copies ok to upload to app
    • If/when admitted, then provide official

* 1 set to GEPA (Grad Division)

* 1 set to EDS

4. 3 Letters of Recommendation

    • Recommenders will be auto e-mailed w/instructions on how to upload letters
    • Ok if you are not able to get letters from “suggested” sources

5. Statement of Purpose

    • 2-3 pages, typed, single spaced
    • See Admissions checklist for more details!

6. Subject Matter Competency

      • CSET exams
      • “Liberal Studies” , “Liberal Arts” & “Elementary Education” majors
      • SMPP (Subject Matter Preparation Program - Multiple Subjects. EDS does not offer)

7. Basic Skills

      • Satisfied via a Bachelor’s degree (or higher), from a regionally accredited institution.

8. U.S. Constitution Requirement

      • UCSD course (link to pre-approved list of courses on checklist)
      • Non-UCSD course (send catalog course description to Danielle for approval - syllabus may be required)
      • AP US Hist./Gov. (score 3/higher)

      • CSU graduates auto qualify

9. International/Non-US resident Requirements:

      • All reqts. above (#s 1 - 8), PLUS
      • Certificate of Clearance (COC )
      • Foreign Transcript Evaluation
      • ALL reqts. MUST be completed by app deadline!

Helpful Information/Tips:

*If taking CSETs

  • schedule asap! (some tests may have limited availability, & score results can take up to 4 weeks)

*All Admissions requirements should be met by the application deadline (Jan. 23, 2025), in order to give yourself the best chance of admission.

*Holistic review by admissions committee, made up of EDS faculty

*Notification of decisions - end of March - end of April.
