Idea

Multi Functioned System With The Following Capabilities:

  • Map on mobile app to see where other students are in the gym and the availability of machines/equipment (think movie theater seat availability for gym equipment).

  • Fingerprint recognition system (like a switch) on each machine to record the users data and progress - report directly to the user via the app, can be shared with community through leaderboard: compete with friends

  • Ability to meet up with others using the app that share same goals, similar experiences, or have the same level of lifting experience

Written Reflection

Our group worked together to create a mobile app that intends to solve the issue of going to crowded gyms, finding like-minded gym users to lift with, and recording progress in a concentrated platform. Our team started brainstorming by thinking about problems in our everyday life. As we have learned, it is often best to first identify the problem, and then attempt to create or find a solution. Several discussed issues were consistent with the fitness industry. Our group members used their own experience to recognize the issue of overpopulation within Ohio State gyms.

Many that regularly go to the gym point out that they often have to wait for equipment and machines. Other times, they complain that they cannot find like-minded gym users to work out with or record their personal record lifts in a system easily. These problems originally identified by our students at Ohio State can be seen at large in the fitness industry throughout the country in gyms. We collaborated to create an app that would solve these problems. The user-friendly app entitled “SimpleFit'' intends to allow local gym users to monitor the availability of fitness equipment at their local gym, socialize and meet up with other gym users with goals and fitness acumen, and finally track their progress in a sleek, unified, and intuitive platform. The app also includes bonus features that have competition and extended insight into one’s workout. Overall, the app is meant to be purchased by gyms via subscription and distributed to gym members to enhance their experience and incentivize the user to get fit.

After building the app, we hope to test our product in the market. First, we will start at smaller gyms to see how the users enjoy the app. Once we receive positive results, we hope to scale the app into bigger corporations. The end goal is to incorporate our app into rec centers schools like Ohio State as well as gyms across the country so that students like us can have a better gym experience.

Coming up with our idea was the most difficult part of the process. Many people had different ideas for which product or idea to choose. Some had to pitch why their idea was superior and others had to compromise. We had to listen to others’ opinions, and then deliberate to decide which idea was best overall for the project. Once the idea was concrete, the group was more cohesive and agreed on the general concepts. The free, user-friendly app was ultimately named “SimpleFit” to show the ease with which the app can be used, and how the app makes the gym experience more enjoyable and efficient. Overall, our group had to voice our opinions, learn from others' perspectives, and collaborate to solve a problem that we each see in our daily lives.
